Fall Necessities

For this first Fall Frenzy segment I am going to discuss my personal opinion on fall necessities! In the post you will find my picks for fall!

Cardies!
Cardigans are one of my favorite pieces, I wear them year around to keep warm or to complete a look! Here, I picked out four different options! I suggest picking one cardigan from each pair, or if you are a cardie lover like me, splurge for all four!
Untitled #21
Pick One: Patterned or Comfy/Casual
These are two more casual options! Wear a patterned cardie over almost any outfit to add something unexpected or pair a comfy casual one with some jeans and boots. I wear my black and white striped cardie or leopard one with almost anything!
Pick One: Party Cardie or Classy Contrast
These are more dressy options, a contrast cardie can dress up jeans and flats while a sparkly show-stopping Party cardie can make a statement all on its own!

Accessorize
Untitled #19
I think everyone needs these few simple accessorizes that you can wear over and over again! The Magic Belt is a super thick and slimming belt, wear it over chunky knits! A skinny belt can be used to cinch almost anything while adding a pop of color or slimming your waist in heavier fall clothes. A fall hat or headband can save a bad hair day or make a statement on its own! I also suggest investing in a fun or colorful cocktail ring and sassy scarf!

Step In Style
New shoes are one of the most exciting parts of fall! So for shoes, I created three different pairs to pick from!
Untitled #18
Pick One: Biker Boots or Ridding Boots
Boots are a fall must, but the style depends on the person! I suggest choosing ridding or biker boots... or both (I like to switch it up so I have both!)
Pick One: Chunky Booties or Chunky Pumps
Chunky heels are a trend that started appearing last fall but is still hott! Everyone needs a pair of chunky epic pumps or chunky platform booties.
Pick One: Classic Flats or Colored Flats
Chic flats are a girls best friend! They keep an outfit cute while saving your feet from monster heels! I think everyone needs one pair of flats that could be worn with every outfit! A classic pair will get the job done, but a solid color pair can also be added to almost any look for an unexpected pop of color.

Bundle Up

Pick one to Splurge and one to Steal:
Trench Coat, Peacoat, Blazer or Tweed Jacket
Untitled #20
As the seasons change so does the weather! As a result, everyone needs a new jacket to keep warm in the crisp fall air. All girls need one good, thick jacket to splurge on from thier favorite store or designer and a fun, current and cheap from a bargain store like Forever 21.

Carry All
Big, Satchel & Party Bag
Untitled #17
With the change of weather, comes a reason to change your bag! Every fall I look for a big classic bag in a neutral color, a smaller over the shoulder satchel and a fun clutch or party bag.

Something....
New seasons always bring new trends that should be celebrated! This fall look for something in each of these categories that coincide with your style!
Leopard, Sparkly, Black & White
With a Bow or in your Favorite Color

PERK Your Interest

Greetings Fashionistas!
Today I am going to be discussing a designer I have been watching for about six months but recently made my first purchase from, Dorothy Perkins!
This Brilliant British Brand first perked my interest when I stubbled upon some of their products while leisurely creating sets via Polyvore. Then, when I was in London I visited not one but two Dorothy Perkins Store fronts.
Sadly, due to our nations current weak dollar in contrast to the British Pound, Dorothy's usual reasonably priced products practically double in cost for the American shopper. Don't let this discourage you from checking them out! They still have pretty good prices, even with the exchange rate, and they usually dabble in some awesome sales! This brings me to my recent purchase, the website was having a grand sale so I absolutely had to snatch up some goodies for myself and then felt the need to share my new pieces with you. Click to enlarge.

Color Blocking Made Easy
I trend I have always really enjoyed, even prior to its current trendiness, is Color Blocking! I think I like best that when paired with bright colors and mod dresses and it often gives off a sixties vibe. However, in the case the color blocking skirt I purchased is simple enough that it can be worn as a basic!
I really like the idea of camel for fall (I know... camel is so close to brown... and you know my feelings about brown clothes...) especially paired with maroon! So here I paired my skirt with a black bow top, my favorite maroon owl cardigan, black skinny belt and gold wedges. I'm accessorized with a matching maroon men's vintage bow tie, that I bought for my boyfriend Paris but stole back to wear in my hair (sorry Paris!) with my creation Scrabble "HI" Rings (for sale, Purchase Here) and a emerald Kate Spade bangle.

Sweetheart Dress
This is probably my favorite new purchase: the sweetest heart print dress. I love that the skirt is full enough that I could poof it up by adding a petticoat... or two, and I am obsessed with the fact that it has pockets!!! I also love clothes that look more expensive than they are.. yay!!!
The dress is such a statement piece that it doesn't need much else outfit wise so I double belted it with a white and blue skinny belt, added gold wedges a yellow Kate bangle, my "HI" rings, gold bow Kate earrings and wore my Kate bow ring as a hair bow!
Pleated Perfection
My last purchase is perfect mix of classic and color! The length and silhouette have a mature and classy feel while the bright colors and print keep it youthful and fresh! Also, I am such a sucker for pleats!
I paired this skirt with matching colored pieces for an all over bright, bolt and blocking statement. I tucked in a kelly green tank and added an oversized bright blue cardigan worn with my "HI" rings, striped green Kate bangle, brown Vince Camuto booties, and green ribbon hair bow.
It was crazy hot in Arizona when I was taking the above pictures, so please don't judge me on my sweatiness! But I have no moved to San Francisco, and will be blogging from a the city!!

Oh, the Places I'll Go

Welcome Back!
Lately, I have been obsessed with the idea of vintage luggage, especially vintage train cases! Additionally, with my plans to move to San Francisco (tomorrow, eek!) I needed someway to display my cosmetics in future, much smaller bathroom! As a result, using a train case was the perfect solution!

S-A-L-E

Hello Dolls!
So as some of you may know I am super into crafting and make a lot of the things you can find in my home as well as the things I wear! Anyways, two weeks ago I made something I have been planning on making all summer: Scrabble Rings!

Ever since, I have received so much positive feedback. In fact, without comments on my creations! Based on popular demand and the suggestions of others, I have decided to begin selling these little beauties, but before determining if you wish to purchase, why don't you take a peak at some of my creations!

100 Years of Fashion

Welcome back readers to a very special Courtney's Closet entry... my 100th post!

In order to celebrate 100 posts of clothing and challenges I'm going to travel back in time exploring 100 years of fashion and paying homage to the trends of the time, starting with the 1920's. Click the images to enlarge!

The Roaring Twenties
When I think 20's fashion I immediately think flappers! For this look I'm wearing a black flapper dress purchased for my murder mystery dinner party with my Grandmothers pink pearl knotted necklace, glitter gold Steve Madden pumps, pearl studs and a bow headband worn flapper style.

The Trying Thirties
The thirties still had a bit of flapper influence, women wore loose but longer dresses and sported snug and sassy hats. Pearls were of course still presence as well as the use of big coats and fur. To tackle the thirties I'm wearing a loose, long pink dress with flowing sleeves cinched with a black ribbon, a black hat, my Grandmothers pear necklace, pearl studs, black platform pumps, and a champaign fur coat purchased from Goodwill.

The Fighting Forties
The forties were also rather similar to the twenties and thirties with a few changes. The hats grew bigger and floppier while the hem lines got shorter, also women and men both wore trench coats. To embody this time, I wore a tan and black hat with a black and white striped dress, a tan trench coat and black booties.

My Favorite! The Fifties
Awhhh the Fifties, a simpler time ... well except for the lack of equal rights and constant fear of bombing, but forget that for a moment and who wouldn't want to live in the fift
Awhhh the Fifties, a simpler time ... well except for the lack of equal rights and constant fear of bombing, but forget that for a moment and who wouldn't want to live in the fifties! Fashion wise, the 1950's is my favorite decade to date, the diner girls, the poodle skirts, the saddle shoes, the cate eye glasses, the pin-up girls and the chic housewives vacuuming in stilettos and pearls...I love it all! For this look I'm channeling a vintage diner girl vibe by wearing a wrap around yellow skirt and a black and white tie top (both purchased at goodwill) with a red bow headband, saddle shoe inspired keds, pearl studs, my real eye glasses that are somewhat vintage themselves and carrying a red train case.

The Swinging Sixties
Like the 50's the sixties are another decade I adore, so much so that hints of it often sneak their way into my everyday wardrobe (the fifties do as well... its really a problem. I was totally born in the wrong time period!). The sixties were liberating and full of change for every one including women, and the fashion is definitely indicative of the alterations of the era. Shirts got way shorter and colors grew brighter and for the first time in a long time, women began to take control of their sexuality, as evident through their fun and flirty attire. Here I am wearing a psychedelic printed top that's a sixties shape over a orange dress I scrunched into a mini skirt with white chunky Vince Camuto pumps. I accessorized with tan sixties shaped glasses, bright Kate Spade bangles, a colorful pattered scarf, white clutch and red/gold earrings.

The Smooth Seventies
Although the seventies aren't my favorite ear fashion wise (I'm not into the whole hippie chic, beachy grunge, browns and dark greens thing) I do love love LOVE Marsha Brady, hence why I purchased the shirt I am wearing in this look. I found this top at a goodwill in Sacramento and after scanning the label I was able to determine its was made at least 30 years ago and personally decided that I MUST have belonged to Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. So of course I had to have it, but never intended to actually wear it, before today! Its tucked into flair gap jeans and a teal belt, paired with Vince Camuto booties, dark lipstick (gross) and big brown sunglasses. Not necessary my favorite outfit, but I think Marsha would wear it, so its good enough for me.

The Explosive Eighties
The Eighties!!!! Surprisingly, another one of my favorite decades, although it differs so much from my other favorites. Everything was bigger, better and perhaps a bitt too much at this time. More was always More! I also consider the eighties to be one of the most epic decades, music, attitude, style, movies and fashion wise. Madonna, one of my favorite famous people EVER became extremely popular and somewhat represented the era, as a result I dare to deem her the Princess of the decade. For this look I am wearing a cropped black jacket over a blue animal print tank tucked into a black skirt and white petticoat. I'm also in hot pink lace leggings, a studded belt, chunky bangles, multiple ring, black dangling earrings, studded pumps and a pink hair tie.

The New Nineteen Nineties

The 1990's was an exciting decade full of new and useful inventions, however, it was also full of y2k fear and frenzies. As a result, fashion as well as other things somewhat came to a standstill and style took a backseat to the decade's dread. Nevertheless, amongst the revere, some young fashionista's did emerge as featured in the 1995 film and later television series ('96-'99) Clueless!! One of the movie's supporting characters, Dionne, is up there with Carrie Bradshaw on my list of fictional favorites. So for this look, I channeled the movie's style by wearing a sheer blouse (I found this little pretty at a Goodwill and instantly though 90's Carrie and Dionne, so it had to come home with me) with a think black leather belt, houndstooth skirt, maroon knee highs and school girl black booties. With my new Kate Spade bag and a fabulous Dionne-esque black hat, that my boyfriend Paris hates... but what does he know :]

The 21st Century: Melting Pot Millennium
The 2000's (that sounds weird... I can't believe I am referring to years such as 2008... [when I graduated from highschool... OLD] as past fashion years) were a decade of mash-ups! Basically, we as a generation just lumped a bunch of past fashion looks together and deemed it something new! However, one girl of only 17 at the time did bring something new fashion wise that generated a wave of trends that even 12 year old Courtney had to jump on the bandwagon of. So here I am paying homage to Avril Lavigne when she stepped onto the music scene in 2002 wearing boy clothes and skater shoes and asking, "Why you have to go and make things so complicated?". I'm wearing a white lace tank (lace was one trend that was actually worn in a different way in the 2000's) with Gap boyfriend jeans, A polkadot tie I purchased for Paris, studded belt and fire converse (I bought these in my grunge/punk-rock/tomboy phase... only they hardly got any use since I was permanently attached to my giant Osiris skater shoes. The tips of my hair were also pink and flipped out, and all my shirts were black... gross Courtney).

Lets here some feedback!
What was your favorite look? What about your favorite decade's style? I would love to hear some feedback! There's ten looks so can we try for 10 comments? Ready, set, comment!

Goodwill Hunting

Welcome back!

Today's post is all about my favorite place to shop: Goodwill! Okay, okay before you turn running from the blog, hear me out! Contrary to popular belief, I am super super cheap especially when it comes to clothing and I choose not to wear the same exact outfit more than once and prefer to switch things up. As a result, in the clothing quandary of quantity vs quality, I opt for the former leaving me with lower quality options such as forever 21. However, by shopping at goodwill every 2 weeks on half off day, I not only gain the thrill of the hunt but am also able to achieve quality and quantity by purchasing gently used quality clothing at cheap prices. Ultimately, I believe in saving on clothes and splurging on things that could be worn daily such as shoes, jewelry and accessories. In doing so, I'm able to spend the cash I do save on the more important things such as Kate Spade cuties :]

This post will serve as my personal homage to all of the goodies Goodwill has given me by displaying outfits created almost entirely out of my frugal finds in hopes to sway some of you non believes in the power of Goodwill. Click the images to enlarge and lets get started!

Think Pink, Pink, Pink
This first monochromatic look is pink all over, literally. I paired a Ann Taylor Loft tank ($5 purchased for $2.50 on half day) tucked into pink skirt (Purchased as a pair with another jacket for $1 on dollar day, so technically it cost me $0.50) with a pink BP Nordstrom brand cardigan ($5 purchased for $2.50) and a white and gold belt ($1 purchased for $0.50).
$2.50+$0.50+$2.50+$0.50 for a total of $6 spent on this outfit's clothing components.
I accessories with non goodwill purchases including Kate Spade gold earrings, pink and orange gold bangles, gold Michael Kors wedges (purchased from a second hand store: Sunset Exchange) and my newest Kate Spade goodie a black and white bow bag.

Up Up and Away
This second look has one of my favorite new pieces in it: A Talbots hot air balloon skirt purchased for $3.50 at goodwill! Its paired with a navy Banana Republic v-neck (purchased for $1 on dollar day) and a white and gold belt also from goodwill ($0.50). The outfits accessorized with brown Vince Camuto booties, a gold ring, gold Juicy Couture necklace and a maroon bow headband.
$3.50+$0.50+$1= $5

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
This next outfit is somewhat 80's and girlie! I'm wearing a polka dot dress ($9 purchased for $4.50) with a Talbots white cardigan ($5 purchased for $2.50) and a purple belt that came with a skirt ($6 purchased for $3, so lets say the belt cost half of that, $1.50). This look's non-goodwill components include white Vince Camuto peep toes purchased at Last Chance, Kate Spade green bangle, green hair bow I made, with a gold broach and gold and red earrings that my mom passed down to me.
$4.50+$2.50+$1.50= $8.50

Red Hott
Here I am channeling another monochromatic look by synching a red silk dress ($10 purchased for $5) with a red and gold Anne Klien belt (purchased for $1) and red bow shoes ($8 purchased for $4). I accessorized with a gold bracelet that my mom passed down to me, a purple and red Kate Spade bag and gold Kate bow earrings.
$5+$1+$4= $10

Weekend Escapé
This last look features one of my favorite pieces lately: cityscape skirts, I have purchased a few from second hand stores. For the outfit, I''m wearing a black and white silk polka dot top ($3) with a colored city scape Talbolts skirt ($5) and black tie up shoes ($4). This outfit is accessorized with non-goodwill purchased black leather gloves, a black leather belt, black retro hair piece, gold necklace (a gift from my Grandmother, Thanks Grandma!!!) and a red train case.
$3+$5+$4= $12

I would love to hear what you all think so see some of your own goodwill inspired outfits! Until next time, Have a fashionable and hopefully frugal day!

Mannequin

Welcome back Fashionistas!
So although my favorite blog segment thus far has come to a close (Personal Paper Dolls) I still have something similar up my sleeves to share with you, a fabulous post I call MANnequin -- a masculine twist on my personal paper doll experience.

This post was actually a joint effort, where my boyfriend and paper doll photographer Paris helped me in developing the idea. Anyways, for this post I will be trading in my dolls for action figures and styling an important man in my life: Paris Sims.

X Man:
This first look was inspired by one of Paris's favorite historical figures: Malcolm X. Here Paris is wearing a short sleeve gray button up shirt tucked into dark jeans with black dress shoes, his geek chic glasses, a black watch and a black and white polka dotted skinny tie.

Come Fly With Me:
Paris's second look was created around a thrift store find: a vintage brown aviator jacket that gives off a pilot feel and reminds me of Top Gun. The jacket is complimented with a light blue faux denim dress shirt, light wash Calvin Klein jeans, a brown belt, brown vintage sun glasses, a blue watch and authentic, yet stolen bowling shoes.

Britts Know Best:
For the third look, we channeled a British band vibe by dressing Paris in dark jeans a white tee gray polo shoes a navy watch and a British inspired letterman's jacket.

Vintage Vibe:
Paris and I are similar in that we often allow hints of vintage to make their way into our wardrobes. As a result, this outfit touches upon on 1950's feel by pairing a French Connection UK short sleeve casual dress shirt with gray pants, a gray and red tie, blue watch and bowling shoes.

Colorfully Casual:
This last look is one of my favorites because it firmly represents Paris's style while pulling him somewhat outside of his comfort zone. It also helps that he is wearing my absolutely favorite color: Kelly Green! For this final look he is wearing a purple dress shirt with a kelly green tie under a gray cardigan with a black belt, gray polo shoes and dark jeans. While I am wearing a kelly green tank tucked into a black skirt with a black menswear vest.
