Falalala Florence

It's a classic rags to riches fabric fairytale. An average girl, born in rural Queensland Australia in 1899 who died as the Princess of Pattern in 1977.

She did it all: traveled the world, hobnobbed with royals, dabbled as a professional singer and painter and interior designer all while starting her revolutionary international wallpaper company that sold her own designs.
Who is this spectacular individual you may ask? The one and only Florence Broadhurst.

Now, almost 30 years later, Florence's fabulous designs will be resurrected into Kate Spade's 2012 year of pattern.
The brand will celebrate a different wallpaper turned fabric each season, for a total of four fantastic fabric features. Other patterned pretties will also show up throughout the year, but Florence and her creations are the main event!

Naturally, my recent Florence fascination was initiated by her recent association with Kate Spade, but after diving a little deeper into the depth of FB I found myself launched into a full blown Florence Free For all!
She truly was an extraordinary woman with a amazingly interesting life. And since it was the sixties and seventies, she was somewhat of a trail blazer for business women and female empowerment. Sadly, her whimsical story and an unfortunate ending, Florence the Fabulous was murdered in her Paddington Studio in '77. Her killer was never found, and her death still remains a mystery although most believed she was another victim of serial killer John Wayne Glover.

But before her life was cut short, Florence sure made the most of everyday doing more then what most could do in four lifetimes. She won awards for her work as a professional solo singer and joined the musical group the Diggers. She spent the early 1920's touring South East Asia and China as a member of comedy sextet know as the "Globe Trotters" and later renamed the "Broadcasters". She established the Broadhurst Academy in Shanghi in 1926, which taught musical instruments and culture as well as diverse types of dance and journalism.

By the end of the 1920's Broadhurst was also co-directed a stockbroking company with her significant other of the time in. Then during World War II she served in the Australian Women's Voluntary Services  and opened her home to Australian soldiers.

By 1949 she was a traveling new mommy, producing 114 landscape paintings that were shown at multiple galleries including the famous David Jones Art Gallery in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. She established her Australian hand painted wallpaper company, advertised as "the only studio of its kind in the world".

When her husband left her and her son in 1961, she was foundation member of the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales and a Society of INterior Designers of Australia all while being involved in charity activities, teaching at the National Art School and being a single mom.

Today her designs still live on through Australia, UK and US design stores and through Cadrys Handwoven RugsFlorence Broadhurst Rug Collection launched in 2008. And next year Kate Spade will do their part in celebrating this one of a kind women and her life's work.

Sparkling Sneak Peak

Pop Quiz! Name my favorite Brand?
Kate Spade of course! I'm the KSNY biggest fan! Some (like my boyfriend) might call my fascination an obsession or even an addiction. But hey, if you are going to addicted to something, it might as well be handbags dipped in glitter and twirl worthy polka dot dresses, right?
Champagne for Everyone
Anyways, as I have mentioned before I am not living out my dreams as a employee of Kate Spade! To share my enthusiasm for the brand and my job will all of you, and hopefully convert some of you to katespade-aholics, I am dedicating these next few posts to a Sparkling Sneak Peak: a taste of what's to come at KSNY!

Twinkle Toms

I love this time of year because with the changing weather comes wardrobe changes. And as we begin to bundle up, our favorite designers take it all off and reveal their Spring/Resort 2012 collections!

One thing coming this spring that I am really excited about are Toms Ballet flats! I have never been much of a Toms fan, I love the idea and what the company stands for but the shoes don't really coincide with my personal style.

However, I do love ballet flats, now that I live in San Francisco I wear them almost every day. Anyways, I am beyond excited to purchase a pair of these cuties this spring while doing my part to provide shoes to those in need!

What do you think? Will you be investing in these "do-goodie" two shoes?! And be sure to check out Tom's biggest brand fan: the fabulous Alaina and her favorite Toms as my personal paper doll.
