Weekends are For Exploring

10th April 2015

IMG_3290     … and Pizza, okay mostly Pizza.IMG_3342Weekends are for brunch, or bagels (or sometimes both). My perfect saturday starts with Murrays bagels and Walking Waffles (preferably in bare legs, come on Spring, get it together), aside from eating, I really don’t care what else we do – but I usually want a “real meal” (aka a blogger brunch that I spend 5 min gramming before eating and anger my brunch dates with) a few hours later. Some saturdays I stroll down 5th ave to max out my credit card, but I usually crawl back into bed post brunch & blog while catching up on TV from the week.IMG_3304

Sundays are another story, I usually sleep in longer than I should, and when the weather is warm enough I like to take Waffles on a long walk through the west village or stop by the dog park (I went last week with Olivia and her frenchie, Batman – check out her blog here). Sometimes we will do a little museam hopping or I head up town to meet my bestie Sheree on the upper west side for a girl date. Oh and as for brunch, I try not to go out and spend my rent money on avocado toast two days in a row, but sometimes a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.IMG_3327This weekend it’s supposed to be mid sixties and sunnies in NYC (finally) so as long as I didn’t totally just jinx it, here are 5 things to do this weekend.

Screen Shot 2015-04-10 at 1.01.56 AM
1. Wander around the West Village because the west village is the best village – shop bleecker street, grab a cupcake at magnolias and if you’re feeling really touristy you can pop onto the “carrie bradshaw” stoop and take a photo (see mine here)

Screen Shot 2015-04-10 at 12.57.03 AM
2. Museum Hop – I love making a day of it at one museum, but visiting three to five in one day for a few hours each is way more fun. My favorite is the Met, not sure why but If you go you’ll have to check out the rooftop. I also really love the museum of natural history (because dinosaurs, duh) and getting to quote little tiny Owen Wilson from Night at the Museum always makes a trip more fun.

3. Brunch – oh hey, did you know i love brunch? My favorite spots are The Smile (where I always go with my good friend Cal), and the new Jacks Wife Freda in the West Village. Plus is you’re planning on gramming, Jacks has the best lighting… and yes, you can totally judge me for knowing these things.

Screen Shot 2015-04-10 at 12.57.23 AM
4. Build a fort – because being seven is so much more fun than being twenty something, and NYC apartments are basically the size of a refrigerator box, so you’re basically half way there! The best way to spend a Saturday night after a long day out, is by staying in. Get a movie, pull out all of your sheets, grab your bestie, some flowers (for ambiance… duh) and start building. My best friend, Sheree and I love to try and fail at fort building – I’m no architect but I can build a mean living room teepee 😉

5. Get lost – take the train to a new (but safe) neighborhood that you never go to – I’m really bad about making it up town so I would go exploring on the upper east or west side – and just explore. Wander up and down the tree lined streets, try out a little coffee shop or two and google any cool buildings you come upon. Oh and if you want to get reaaaal deep on me, jam to some Chet Baker or something magical while you’re doing it – you’ll think you’re in a movie, I promise

Lets be real, I work full time in addition to running this bad boy, so a good 95% of my weekends are spent blogging (and the other 5% usually involves brunching, all captured on instagram) but that doesn’t mean I don’t totally live for the weekends. Although I generally enjoy working in fashion from 9-5 (errr 9-8) I love running Color Me Courtney, so although the weekends are filled with “work” it doesn’t always feel like it, when you’re doing what you love. Anyways, if you do something fun this weekend, tell me so I can live vicariously!

Seven things you need for Spring

8th April 2015

The secret’s out, Shop Bop is having a serious sale (score) so to celebrate, I’ll be sharing my top spring picks that are currently 25% off  until 4/9 (use the code SPRING25) … oh and just to make things interesting (and probably make you hate me) I’m going to use as many words that start with “s” as I possible can, ready, set, go!

Hold up, before we get started there are ALOT of links of this post that will take you directly to everything your spring closet needs (yay), click on the image of the link will take you directly there – booya. Plus all the links will open in a new tab sooo you can click away, and then keep on reading! Once you’re done, everything you loved from this post will be in the tabs up top – oh heck yeah, now let’s do this thing!

f

Distressed Jeans

Oh ripped jeans, the trend your mom totally hates but you boyfriend is kind of crazy about that just wont seem to go away – and I can’t say I’m mad about it… like, at all.

Sassy Swimwear

To make a serious splash this Spring & all Summer long in show-stopping swimwear, just don’t forget the sun screen lobster red skin is sooo last season.

A Where-Everyday Bag… or two

For spring bags, you need something neutral and new to wear the crap out of all Summer. Here’s one of the only times you can go big (with a spurge) or home (with something surpizingly affordable) or if you really want to live life on the edge, and potentially blow your bank account, why not try both?

Serious Stripes

I’m not even going to apologize for my stripe addiction, it’s real clear that I have issues… and now so can you. For spring, you have to try them with something floral, striped bag + floral dress, floral tee + striped shoes or any other crazy cute combo … seriously, give it a whirl – I know you’ll look fab!

Standout Sandals

Ladies, it’s time for a pedicure (and sadly, time to start shaving again … please tell me I’m not the only one who gives that up for winter… and sometimes Fall too, whooops!) show off those toesies with some suh-weet sandal action.

Spot On

Like stripes, I wear spots on replay all year long, but especially come Spring. Here’s another opportunity to pattern mix, try spots with my go-to stripes, more floral prints or even a fun gingham print!  To keep from looking crazy, keep to a color scheme like white floral tee with a white & blue polka dot tee or black & white spots with white & black stripes.

Going Graphic

Hmm, what does one wear with a cool graphic tee? oh I know, everything. Wear your heart on your sleeve (errr, chest) and show the world how you really feel (or how awesome you are) with a graphic tee to pair with your new fav distressed jeans, midi skirts, sporty slides, over swimwear or under overalls!

Honorable Mentions

All though these styles didn’t make the top seven, they should still totally be on your spring radar, and potentially your want list this season:
Crop Tops || Midi Skirts || Sporty Slides || Bucket Bags ||Big Sunnies
Off the Shoulder || Day Clutches || Skorts (yeah, they’re never going away… like never)

So stop by ShopBop & get shopping!!! Oh and while you’re at it, why dontcha pick up something for me (and waffles too) 😉

Spring Twist

7th April 2015

IMG_4636    Oh hey, incase you haven’t noticed – spring has totally sprung and I’m so FREAKING EXCITED.IMG_4649 (1)So if you have eyes, a pulse or an instagram you can tell it’s totally that time of year where your feed gets flooded with the obligatory flower shopping pics (I’m pretty sure I’ve already posted three – and be three I mean seven – and its been spring for like 24 hours … so sorry bout that). But Spring is for so many things, bare legs, open toed shoes and a time to try all of the latest trends – some old, and some new. But since sticking to one trend is a total snooze fest, why not pair two contrasting ones, seamlessly? We got this!IMG_4629Hmmm, two trends we love for Spring but are kind of sort of total opposites? Oh I know – let’s pair sporty styles with girly florals for a mash-tastic and totally unexpected look? Challenge accepted! Sporty spice & posh were friends once right (who knows, maybe they still are, please say yes) so let’s just pretend they had a braided crown, lipstick wearing love child and this outfit is it!

IMG_4638

I fell head over heels for this crazy cute & semi-sporty tee (plus i totally didn’t hate the under $50 price tag) and I knew we would be fast friends. I wear her with distressed jeans on replay, but decided to pair her with something a little girly instead and wham, bam, thank you pam (and by pam, I mean Cynthia… Cynthia Rowley that is, because she designed my new fav skirt) this look was born. Tucking this loose & sporty tee into a neoprene floral skirt gave both of the pieces a totally different vibe. This tee that usually screams “cool & caz” got a girly-make over while this twirly worthy skirt, got totally turned down in the best way possible for a weekend-chic look.IMG_4648Just because I gave this flirty skirt a downtown twist, doesn’t mean I couldn’t dress up the look with fun accessories. A classic, quilted bag (that’s currently 20% off here), serious arm party and oversized sunnies help round out the look by adding a touch of glam. Plus, over the Knee Boots on bare legs, serve as the perfect transitional piece for Spring all while bringing the Drama to this sporty-chic style.IMG_4652P.S. if you love my braid, learn more about how to get the look hereIMG_4622Mixing styles doesn’t have to be hard, pick two things that kind of contradict each other and find a common thread, like a color, pattern or even fabric. I took the easy way out by pairing two black pieces together, so it looked unique yet purposeful. You can try the same thing by playing in a color family, or recreating the exact same look with the pieces below. Either way you work it, just remember opposites attract!IMG_4621

Spring Things

1st April 2015

IMG_0611 For me, spring means denim jackets, over-sized sunnies, easy tees and stripes galore! And today, I somehow managed to put all of my “spring things” into one easy, breezy outfit. IMG_0660IMG_0664I basically live in my denim jackets all Spring and Summer long, they are the perfect way to dress up a graphic tee or dress down a printed dress – plus since denim on denim is still all the rage, it’s an easy way to hop on this trend. Honestly, If you don’t own a LDJ (little denim jacket) what are you waiting for you – invest in one, I promise you won’t regret it!IMG_0665The pieces from this outfit work great together, but are all basics. This skirt is perfect with printed tops, cropped sweaters, colorful tanks or the white-tee/denim-combo I’m wearing; and a soft white v-neck can be worn with distressed denim and sneakers on a casual weekend, worn under overalls or tucked into any cotton midi skirt (as shown). IMG_0620IMG_0691I thought my vacation craving would go away when the temps started to rise – but no such luck. I’ve found my since going color me crazy in NYC and in serious need for a trip off this Island and onto a more tropical one, so I can wear this outfit like ASAP. 1 Hotel, NYCIf you too need an escape, there’s a cool & unique promo going on at 1 hotels where providing your email will earn you 11% off all 1 Hotel stays for the next 11 years … Bananas right, I promise, this isn’t an April fools joke – Enter here. They currently have a South Beach location but are opening one in Central Park in the next few months, so I’ll be definitely trying that location out for my next “stay-cation”. If you’re planning a trip sometime soon, take me with you or at least tell me all about it so I can live vicariously through you!IMG_0608
