Red, White & Popsicles?! Yeah sure why not – its 4th of July Week so Calories Don’t Count.
I’m just gonna go ahead and say what you’re all thinking – July is like the best month ever. It means we’re half way through the year (what), we get to celebrate our great nation (yay), bikinis basically become the new black (awesome) and oh yeah, it’s Courtney’s birthday month (say-whaaaa). Any way you slice it, that sounds like THE BEST MONTH EVER and guess what, it’s practically here!
To kick of this month of madness (good madness of course) we start celebrating with the 4th of July – one of my favorite holidays because I love fireworks, BBQ and wearing red, white and blue! Plus it totally helps that a red lip is basically mandatory, I mean come on, be patriotic… geeez.
When I saw this crazy cute Popsicle dress I knew I NEEDED it for 4th of July, and of course every other day of my life. Not only is it off the shoulder (score) and flowy (double score) but it also has pockets (WHAT!!) and is so crazy soft and comfortable I literally want to sleep in it … and I may or may not have done that when I feel asleep for a little mid-day snooze with Waffles. Not gonna lie, it was a little frumpy at first, but I added my go to brown belt and that changed everything! Making it super slimming at the waist. The length was also a little bit of an issue for me, hitting at a weird place, so my brown summer wedges helped me grow a bit to conquer that and boom, a perfect Popsicle printed 4th of July Look that’s totally bomb(pop) dot come.
Hip Hip Hooray, Three Cheers for the USA Happy Almost Birthday America!
Today I’m sharing a fun way to spend 4th of July in the City – at Coney Island and an equally fun 4th of July look that can be worn all summer long, so I repeat, Hip Hip Hoorray!
Okay, I think Coney Island gets a bad wrap – some people thing its gross, touristy and completely over rated, and yes, It’s totally ALL of those unappetizing thing but also so much more. First of all ITS SO DANG COLORFUL I CAN’T EVEN (I can’t believe I just typed that…please note there was so much sarcasm in that, not sure I could ever say “I can’t even” without it lolZ), second of all HOT DOGS, third of all: All of the Rides and forth of all HOT DOGS.
I love Coney Island, especially on 4th of July. You can spend a day eating everything, going on rides, smelling the salty air, getting salty hair, walking the boardwalk, putting your toes in the sand, going for a swim in the ocean? (it’s not an ocean, I’m actually not sure what it is but it is a Beach-type-thing so I dig it) and oh yeah, eating everything. No lie, I mostly go to stuff my face BUT if you go on 4th of July you can watch the hotdog eating contest (gross, but so awesome) and do all of the above.
Your perfect Coney Island 4th of July trip should start with selfies on the subway, duh. First stop HOT DOGS (are you grossed out by me yet) and then a little boardwalk strutting – I tend to use it as a runway or a dance floor, because why not #everyonesjudging. Then on to ride the rides, and wondering why you didn’t do rides first, hotdogs second, but whatever no regrets!
Next up, maybe some fun games on the boardwalk! I tried to win a really cute stuffed unicorn for Paris and failed, but hey it’s the thought that counts right!? Then maybe time for more food, a second dog maybe, mango on a stick or even some cotton candy, OK lets be real – all of the above. And finally a little walk on the beach … or dance party — same thing.
So what to wear for your Coney Island adventure? A swim suit under a red & white striped cropped top and white overalls, red keds, a shirt or sweater around your waist incase it gets cold, a boater hat and of course a red lippy – because what’s more american than that? NOTHING! Absolutely nothing.
Not sure what it is about a NYC summer, but it somehow becomes appropriate to wear not in much the clothing department?
I get it, it’s hot! But Hey, I kind of like wearing clothes, and the less you have to work with, the harder it is to make an over the top outfit! But don’t fear – today I’m going to teach you how to make less a little more
I mean how am I supposed to create something worth a double take with out crazy layering or pieces on pieces – its hard! But that doesn’t mean I want to be rocking a blazer or any more clothes in this weather. SO how do you make a look look “interesting” without layering and all those other “effortlessly-chic” tricks? Say it with me now – Pattern Play!
Oh hey, did you know I’m kind of sort of into print pairing? Of course you do – it’s all I wear! So are you surprised that I totally rely on pattern play to make my skin-showing and other wise less-than-impressive outfits look super interesting! A crop top and a high waisted skirt? bor-ring we’ve totally seen it before! But a striped bow crop top and a contrasting stripe skirt next to a super cute and colorful vespa? Okay, that I can get into!
So if you’re planning on stripping down this summer but still want to make a statement – just add a little pattern, and then add a little more.
Oh hello Summer, nice to see you again – aren’t you looking maarrrrvelous.
So summer is kind of fun! Hot days, cool nights, ICE CREAM I mean what’s not to love! Shorts get shorter, tans get tanner and everyone is a whole lot happier! It’s kind of like some of your inhibitions are gone and it’s kind of awesome!!! SO your style can totally change too – in a good way. Summer is am awesome time to reinvent yourself and step outside of the box by trying these three fun summer trends.
Would you normally rock a pile full of pom poms, come Fall or Winter? No probably not, but it’s summer so all bets are off! I’m all about the pom pom trim this season, Pom Pom shorts, crop tops dresses and more – so COLOR ME POM POM!
Crazy Cool Clutches
I think it’s safe to say I’m OBSESSED with the day clutch – an easy way to rock an it bit bag (my fav) and can totally take your look from cute to super crazy cool. The easiest way to edge up a look or add a little something something to a summer look is to add a cool clutch for a downtown vibe or even a fun preppy one with a sundress – these clutches work for day, night, dressy or casual… it all works!
Hi I’m Courtney and I’m Twelve. Until last spring, the last time I rocked a pair of overalls I had a lolly pop in hand, pig tales in hair and was twinning with my brother – I promise we didn’t plan it but somewhere there’s a really cute picture of it somewhere of me smiling with crooked teeth and a little bit of food on my face (it’s a hard copy, not digital because it was that long ago, and mom you need to find it – get it together). ANYWAYS, that all changed last spring when Overalls became “cool” again for the first time since kindergarten – score. We ditched the jellies (although those are also on trend now too… weird) but kept this school-girl-chic look and made it downtown – so fun! Well although Overall Overalls are so last spring Overall Dresses are in for Summer – well according to me, and that’s all that really matters right? 😉 Try them over a swim suit, off the shoulder top, striped crop top or basically anything. You’ll feel like you’re headed to disneyland for the first time and look awesome.
SHOP EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAW – YAY!!!
What summer fun thing will you be rocking this season – tell me EVERYTHING!
The centerpiece for every living room is the sofa, if you remember my old apartment you’ll remember I had a teenie tiny yellow velvet love seat (see it here). Honestly there wasn’t even room for Waffles and I to get comfortable on it, let alone room for Paris! So when I moved down stairs (I’m serious, I moved from my old apartment to my new/current apartment in the same building, but floor down) the most important part of the new apartment for me, was the Sofa.
I knew I wanted a sectional, because I love to entertain and have my friends over and lets be real, because I love to put my feet up and watch TV – Is anyone else obsessed with Pretty Little Liars #ImAChild! Plus we have a rare thing in NYC – space, enough room to actually hold a Sectional, say what!!!!!!
No lie, I searched for weeks for the perfect sectional, I looked everywhere but I couldn’t find a good balance of what I wanted, the size a needed for the price I could afford… that is until Apt2B came into my life and saved me.
Honestly, I hadn’t heard of Apt2B before my mom suggested them (she’s an interior designer but lives in Arizona, fun fact that’s where I’m from), but when I first visited their website I know they were the one. They’re a super cool LA based furniture brand with the most amazing modern yet affordable furniture. They’re made in the US, come in custom fabrics and have the most amazing selection – a totally cool brand, with the product to back it up and I’m just obsessed. Anyways, when it comes to furniture I am really picky about the brands I buy from because of durability, quality and comfort!
I really wanted to stick to what I know and go for a yellow sectional for my home like last time or maybe even switch it up with something crazy colorful but Paris shut that down real quick, so we settled on the cutest grey tufted sectional with a vintage vibe yet modern flair, the perfect mesh of our styles and made of upholstered in stain resistant textured poly-blend fabrics so it’s totally Waffle-proof and French bulldog approved. I off set the grey with bright pillows and a crazy colorful rug to make the room more Courtney!
Oh and guess what else, since I am now such a big giant brand fan of Apt2B I have teamed up with them for a super fun give away where one reader will get a $500 gift card! You just have to enter your email address below and the winner will be randomly selected at the end of the month. I will then announce the winner on social media so be sure to follow along, @colormecourtney and @apt2b to see if you’re the lucky winner!
Sometimes you just gotta bring the drama, because like, why not?!
And by Drama, I mean outfit drama, of course! Cause a scene, turn heads, step out of your comfort zone – you know, that kind of semi-scary but equally awesome thing called risk taking – try it, its fun I swear!
I consider myself a big risk-taker when it comes to fashion, I love to try trends – even the kind of crazy ones and make them my own. In fact, when it comes to getting dressed every day, the crazier and scarier the trend is, the more I want to “courtney-fy” it and make it work! Actually, because I am soooo into dressing outside the lines, with my pattern mixing, crazy color combos, full and flirty skirts, bright lips and often outrageous outfits – scaling things back, rocking neutrals and wearing more “normal” outfits is actually the challenge for me than mixing my matches or experimenting with color.
I’ve become so used to pushing the boundaries of fashion that wearing something timeless, classic, chic and more “within the box” but still with a Courtney Twist has turned into more of a statement for me than a striped & floral combo or yellow & blue pairing. This of it this way, imagine someone who doesn’t really wear makeup, maybe foundation a little mascara but for the most part, pretty natural. And then they come to work, school or whatever they’re everyday activity is wearing red lipstick and you’re totally blown away, in a good way – it’s really noticeable and makes a serious impact because its different! Now imagine me wearing red lipstick, lol no impact because I wear crazy colored lipstick on the reg. BUT do you know what does get a reaction, when I scale things back and rock a nude lip – then people notice.
So today’s outfit is like a nude lip, or a little black dress – it’s simple, elegant, easy and kind of different for me. It has that same impact of replacing the red lipstick with a nude one, but is still very Courtney with the sweetheart crop top, pop of pattern & crazy curly waves! Although I switched things up enough to make you notice, I still stayed true to my style while keeping you on your toes. Its sometimes nice to try on a different side of your style while still making sure it is very you because you’re awesome and I wouldn’t want you to be anyone else 😉
I love the drama that this high slit skirt brings, I’m not quite graceful enough to rock it (especially in the wind) so I made sure to wear little black dancer shorts underneath so I don’t give anyone a free show! I love that this look appears to be a dress but is actually two separate pieces while showing a little skin. As a result you could wear it somewhere dressy and tuck it in, or keep it more casual by exposing the mid drift and pairing it with flats – so fun right? Aside from the nude-ish lip, and a leopard clutch the finishing touch for this faux LBD for me was these Stuart Weitzman splurges that I just can’t stop wearing, or gushing about!! I was a little skeptical to purchase them but they are so dang cute and crazy comfy that they instantly elevate any look, making every outfit look more expensive and sophisticated and they’re a total classic that will never go out of style – definitely worth the splurge!!!
Most of the year I am all about a tulle skirt, red lip & high heel combo – but come summer, I turn into a more laid-back, cooler, “Casual Courtney” if you will, but since I am clingy to my tulle & lipstick, I don’t loose them, I just switch to a lighter color & dressed down version of myself … brace yourself, Casual Courtney’s coming atcha!
Don’t worry, when I say dressed down – I don’t mean sweats and no lipstick (ha) come on, you guys know me better than that my now 😉 I mean giving this gorgeous princess skirt a casual vibe because, why the heck not! I paired it with a pastel tank top & my go-to keds for a laid back look, and added my denim jacket because it was actually a little bit chilly this day.
The wind wasn’t a good look for my hair, so up into a messy bun it went – but the up side to bad hair is it gives you a chance to play with your make up. I recently phone met the founder of Biba, who has both an inspiring story and product – I love being able to share cool products like this with you through Color Me Courtney, that’s kind of what it’s all about. She created one of the only compltely natural, luxury, beauty products out there that comes complete enclosed in the cutest carved jewel compact.
I was interested for two reasons, one I read once that the average woman eats about 9 pounds of lipstick in her life, lol gross – and since the average woman probably wear lipstick twice a week or so with average sized lips, and I wear it everyday often reapplying throughout the day and have giant monster lips, I could assume that I’ll probably consume closer to 18 pounds, double gross! Plus, I collect vintage compacts, a collection I took on from my mother who used to do so at my age. A a result when the founder, Sapna, told me she created a natural lip product that soothes and hydrates your lips, comes in great colors a darling vintage-inspired compact and is made without artificial fragrances or dyes, mineral oil, silicon, synthetic waxes or paragons (yes people all this is in your average lipstick haha yikes!) and made ethically in the USA without animal testing (yay bunnies) I totally had to give it a whirl.
When I went through a “natural phase” including a gluten free diet a few years ago (I know, no donuts, what’s wrong with me right) I searched for similar product with no avail so it’s kind of crazy cool to know about a natural lip that still pops like Biba, especially if you unitentially eat as much lipstick as I probably do, once again, gross. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t be giving up all my crazy lipsticks and switching just to natural products, but it is cool to know there is a natural alternative that lives up to my glamorous lipstick expectations 😉 It comes in 3 colors, and I’m wearing the jazzy pink color – inspire! One of the more poppy color options, perfect for spring, summer and pretty much every dang day of the year.
I once saw a bride wearing keds with a tulle wedding gown, they we’re glittery keds but none the less, she looked so freaking happy a natural. Well, my “natural” side just happens to be tulle + keds & a denim jacket, a very toned down version of my usual over the top self, but still me. I couldn’t help but feeling like a runaway bride, or off duty ballerina skipping her opening night after party to go have a sleep over with her girl friends – something I would total do. There was something whimsical, unexpected and limit pushing about pairing my most casual go-to (keds) with my most glamours one, and adding a natural yet glamorous lip as the finishing touch seemed to be the perfect way to round out the look!
The best cure for a bad day (or a boring one) is a picnic in the park! But sometimes planning a picnic – especially a blog worthy one can expensive and stressful, two things a picnic most certainly shouldn’t be!
Lately I’ve been really into to being outside as much as possible but also focused on not stressing the little things and trying to not make life seem so “perfect” I think this is something a lot of bloggers need to work on, we all try really hard to make our life look glamours but thats kind of sort of a lot of work haha. Don’t get me wrong, I love producing killer content for you guys, I honestly would do anything for you – but I want the content to be 100 percent me and if I spend a ridiculous amount of time creating some falsified perception of reality, that’s not me at all!
You guys know by now that I’m pretty much a hot mess 99% of the time. Well that theme runs true with the story behind this picnic, we decided at the last min to pick up and eat outside – so I reached for my super awesome cross body picnic bag, only to watch the strap break before my eyes. Whoops! Instead of feeling discouraged, I reached for my weekend bag and settled on a beach towel (I looked 2 min for my picnic blanket, not sure where that is… actually now that I think about it, I bet its inside my broken basket lol double whoops) threw on some sun screen and headed for the door before I remember I was missing the most important ingredient – food!
Our picnic was mostly snack themed and I was on snack duty so I thought I could just pick something up along the way, when I got the genius idea to grab the boxed snacks I received as a gift the week before – which ended up being the perfect picnic snack and totally turned me on to an amazing idea! Boxed snacks are the new picnic food, with brands like graze and nourish snacks roaming around, why not bring your prepackaged snacks to the picnic to share! Most of these services are already subscription based so if you sacrifice a weeks worth of snacks, you can play hostess with the mostess and be the star of the picnic! Best part? no basket, utensils or bowls required! Since the snacks come prepackaged in a box, they are already perfect to share so set up was a snap! I did have some super cute snack holders, cups, paper straws and other awesome party stuff from AlwaysLou (her site is seriously so cute, check it out) so I tossed those in the bag too, along with a bug off candle and skipped on over to the picnic party, picking up pretty flowers for ambiance, obviously…
If you ever find yourself in an impromptu picnic situation and happen to be a snack subscriber, be sure to give my grab it and go method a whirl! Not everything has to be perfect or planned, somethings are much better when you just enjoy the ride.
Hope everyone’s weekend was super special. What’d you do, I’m nosey, so I wanna know Wishing you a not-so-awful monday.
I’ve said it a thousand times: Rules are lame, this applies for fashion, photography and pretty much everything else in life – so I like to bend some and break the rest, it’s just more fun that way 😉
“Keep Off The Rocks” is what the sign says about 20 inches south of my toes. Haha, whoops. We pretended not to see it as I stepped onto the rocks, I crossed my fingers and toes and potentially eyes? and hoped I wouldn’t fall in. Why? two reason 1- my hair, duh and 2 because my boyfriend isn’t to into water and I’m not sure if he would save me (ha jk he would, right Paris?).
Anyways, I kind of sort of really love that my boyfriend doubles as a photographer. I actually think he does a crazy amazing job, one that, in my opinion even rivals professionals and I’m not at all biased, I promise. He is smart enough to do things like position me away from the Keep Off the Rocks sign so I don’t have to do extra work editing later, tells me to open my eyes when I’m looking too squinty (which is always) and makes me laugh when I look stale.
But, what he doesn’t do is “fix” my outfits and honestly that’s not his job – it’s mine. I also trust him enough not to check the photos all the time … which is what happened here. We shot, moved on, and I went home to notice my dang straps were all over the place in like 90% of the photos haha. I honestly could have easily edited them out, and in all honestly did at first, but then remembered that life isn’t perfect and that my straps did go crazy all day in this dang top, so editing them out would be kind of misleading – and I like you guys too much for that. So here it is, strap mishap and all. I’ll probably end up on some site that bashes bloggers for their imperfects and if so BRING IT.
Anyways, back to this top! I love love love it! I’m all about the off the shoulder trend right now and white is so summer white lace is so necessary, so its a win win win. I was really into the fact that it had the spaghetti straps because it added a different element to my off the shoulder top collection (and I have like 14 thousand of these, and its only June guys, don’t worry more to come). But honestly the straps got real annoying really quick – this might be TMI but my boobs are really high up for my body so most fixed straps are too long for me, if the straps were tight this top would be a dream, but since the straps have a mind of their own and decided to be crazy long, they kept falling down…. like all the time.
I probably went though half of the day with them half up half down looking awesome, and my sweet boyfriend / photographer either didn’t have the heart to tell me that I looked a hot mess or just didn’t notice – either way, I kind of love him for it. So now you know, I’m a mess, not sometimes, not half the time, all the time – one big mess.
You won’t believe what I can fit in this teeny little bag of mine!
If you’ve been following along for a while, you have probably noticed two things: 1 I love it bit tiny baby bags and two I’m a complete mess. So when TILE App – a cool tech product and lost key finder that is tiny & can keep you organized approached me to review their product – I was totally into it. so today I’m sharing my TILE experience and all the little goodies I take with me everywhere.
When it comes to bags the smaller the better, but I still manage to fit everything but the kitchen sink into these little guys, want proof? take a peek: in my bag you’ll find My cell phone, high lighters, a little tooth brush, mini tooth paste, two tubes of lipstick, mini vaseline, mini deoderant, my keys & cards (including TILE), mini nail polish for the necessary touch ups, a portable charger and my iPhone chord.
Okay, now a little about TILE! Full disclosure, they were super sweet and sent me some of their product to test out but I honestly wouldn’t want to share with you guys if I didn’t have a crazy amazing experience with it, and I totally did. Basically their product uses geo tracking to help you locate lost items. Since I’m a mess, I loose my keys all of the time… (honestly maybe happens twice a week? Its really bad) anyways I popped tile on my keys and now whenever I misplace them in my apartment I can track them down using the app – a total time saver! Now if I could only get one small enough for my lipstick (seriously, I loose all of my lipstick, its a problem) then that would be a game changer. Either way, if you try this cool product, hope its super helpful! My dad is really hard to buy for (and luckily doesn’t read my blog) lol so I was thinking this would make an awesome dads day gift for him! If you wanted to pick one up for your dad or yourself you can use the code (TDCQ15 – starts monday 6/15) for $5 any purchase. Big thanks to TILE for letting me try & review their products!
