Let it Go!

31st January 2016

IMG_7192     Welcome to my Winter Wonderland!IMG_7392IMG_7250

Have you ever heard of the Polar Bear Run ? Its this crazy bananas thing that people do on the first of the year where they run into the freezing cold ocean water in their undies or swim suit… but why? For a fresh start, because it’s a challenge or maybe just because it’s a crazy bananas tradition that crazy bananas people do. Well if you ask me, I think it’s because it’s invigorating. Sometimes it can be so fun (and also terrifying, or just plain cold) to do the impossible. In fact, defying the odds and going against all rhyme or reason can be on of the most exciting adventures yet.IMG_7204

I’ve said this before, and I’m going to keep saying it – Perfect if Boring!!! What makes up beautiful is what makes us different! I think thats why I (like everyone else) related to Elsa in Disney’s Frozen (Yes, of course I’m talking about Frozen now – didn’t you see the photos!?) and why this movie was so Epic and relevant! Think about it – Elsa, goes from living in fear of herself, her talents and what makes her special from thinking she has to be alone to be true to herself, to learning that the two aren’t mutually exclusive and that if you can accept yourself, others can too – woo! So what’s stopping the rest of us from following her lead, facing our fears and being ourselves despite the consequences? I’m not sure but whatever it is we have to get rid of it!            IMG_7445

Step one to acting like a princess is always wearing your invisible crown, got it? Good shine that thing up and put it on! Okay, now for step two – twirl a little. If you’re in the market for a fairy-princess tulle skirt (and you should be) Bliss Tulle is your one stop twirl shop. I have a few tulleys and I love them ALL – Wearing a Tulle skirt can be a lot of work but these are always light weight, comfortable (and not itchy), twirl-worthy and fit like a dream!IMG_7535

Speaking of twirl-worthy Bliss Tulle pretties… I also have (And love) this skirt || I’ve been OBSESSING over this Skirt || And kind of need this Skirt

IMG_7175I love when a girl can grow up with a brand – like I have with Disney, (but hey, who says anything about growing up). There are very few shops that I shopped at while I was in high school but can still buy things from – and Windsor is one of them. I bought pretty much every “formal” dress I had at Windsor growing up – Winter Formal, Valentines Dance, Prom, you name it – and just last year I bought a faux leather trench from Windsor that I’ll wear again this Spring. I guess thats why when I needed a formal-y dress for this Winter Wonderland moment, I went back to where it all began, Windsor! I picked up this blue Elsa moment dress, but also a white lace number that I wore as a top tucked into my Tulle skirt – and doubling up, down below (the skirt + the dress underneath) helped keep me from freezing!IMG_7373

Some more similar dresses to drool over include:  this one || this one || and this one IMG_7475

Okay back to bravery – How cool would it be to be fearless? I’m not there and probably won’t ever be but that’s quite an aspiration! Jumping head first into the things that scare you, running without reason into the chilling unknown – some may call if crazy or terrifying but right now, all I can think is – sounds cool! IMG_7588

Next time you find yourself Frozen in fear, think like Elsa and remember ”The biggest mistake you can make in your life is to be continually fearing you’ll make one” IMG_7152

Wearing: White Dress from Windsor (as a top) and most amazing Full Length Tulle Skirt from Bliss TulleAlso Wearing a Blue Dress from Windsor.IMG_7437

So here’s too running head on into the chilling cold and all it holds! I mean Hey, The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway! 😉

Beauty Goals – Products to try, Laser Hair Removal, Skin Care & More

29th January 2016

IMG_2022

I think beauty isn’t skin deep, its about leaving a pretty healthy life and loving the skin you’re in because that’s what makes you beautiful..uh-uall. But that doesn’t mean you cant do a few things to improve your health, beauty or life in different ways – and this year I’m making some big beauty changes, don’t worry, I’ll be sharing them all with you! #duh

*To make this post extra fun, I’ll be sprinkling in a few beauty confessions of my own, my before body and underarms in their current pre-lasered state, as well as some product selects so keep an eye out *
*Dying to try these products*

I’m gonna make 2016 my most beautiful year – focusing on beauty inside and out and achieving different beauty goals! Some of my big beauty goals involve investing (both time and money) into my “beauty”, while others are just about being a little less lazy lol. Today I’m sharing some (but not all) of my BBG (big beauty goals) for the year for three reasons – 1 because I like you, and I can’t really keep a secret; 2 – because if I publish them here, it will help me be more accountable and go through with them and; 3 – so that I can share my experiences with you, answer all of your questions and become your personal beauty guinea pig – sound fun? Of course it does! OH and I’ll be talking all about Laser Hair Removal down below + sharing a coupon code… so yeah, LETS DO IT

*Beauty Confession – I’ve always been jealous of Girls with Freckles, I think they’re super cute and pretty!*

THE LIST – Here it is, my list of BBG’s (Big Beauty Goals, remember)

Treat my skin with the respect it deserves – this includes easy things like washing my face every night (which I’m totally guilty of not doing, whoops), seeing the dermatologist at-least once this year (haven’t done that in a while, double oops) and just learning what works best for my skin!

Hair Flip – I’m so bored with my hair, this year you’ll see me switch things up!

Play with Products to find out what works best for me – I’m super guilty for trying a product for a week or so and tossing it, obviously that doesn’t do anyone any good. This year I promise to do more product research, try top products and stick with them for a while until I can actually say yay or nay about their success rate.

*Beauty Confession – I have a big brow crush on Lilly Collins #browgoals*

Perfect a Foundation Routine – I’ll be honest, most days I’m a tinted moisturizer kind of gal, but every so often I want to have that flawless foundation look, no under eye circles, no zits no nothing – just airbrushed and beyonce-y, can you blame me? This year I will find and perfect a foundation routine!

Invest in a few BBG’s, ones I’ve wanted for a while – these include Laser Hair removal (more on that below), some Dental Work (more on that later) and a few products (below)

Branch out with my Beauty – Like I mentioned, I like to keep things simple with beauty, usually a red lip and not much more! This year I want to break the cycle and try a few things I usually avoid – did someone say smokey eye?

*Beauty Confession – I bite my nails, maybe this year I’ll try to stop … again*

Work It Out – Find fun and healthy ways to eat right and stay in shape… my current shape! Because I’m not at all upset with my body and I accept myself the way I am, but that doesn’t mean a girl can’t get her work out on with super fun Justin Bieber dance parties and what not, right?

Kiss and Tell – Cue the confetti, I’m planning on bringing lots of these BBG’s to Youtube and document the success and failure of them. Make sure you’ve subscribed!

P.S. you guys know I have a youtube channel right? I’m still figuring things out on it but subscribe please & I’ll love you forever!

——————–

Let’s Talk about Laser Hair Removal  It’s no secret that most girls like to have hair free underarms and legs (guilty) but that shaving is not so fun. Honestly, I hate to shave lol I avoid it as much as possible and in the winter? Forget it – I’m wearing pants or leggings everyday so there is no way I’m shaving my legs … don’t judge you know you do it too … or maybe you should lol!

*Some of my go-to beauty favs*

I know I’m kind of late to the party, but I’ve wanted Laser Hair removal for as long as I can remember. My bestie’s mom got it when it was just starting to get popular and I was obsessed with the idea… I even asked for it for Christmas when I was in High school lol. Now that I’m kind of an adult, I thought I should invest in something I’ve wanted for-like-ever. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with splurging on something that might make your life easier. Yeah Laser Hair removal is an investment, in both time and money – overall i’ll be doing about 6 sessions per area (I’m tackling my underarms and legs) and you have to spread out your sessions every six weeks. So this time next year, I’ll be kind of hairless!

Getting Lasered sounds super scary right? So I did a crazy amount of research before choosing Deify Laser + Beauty Lounge as my location for this hair-raising adventure! I’ll be documenting my Laser Hair Removal throughout the year and answering all of your questions about the process! Today I just wanted to introduce to Deify, and my new journey and share why I choose Deify. Deify is a gorgeous salon in Chelsea +(one other location in East Greenbush NY, 10 minutes away from Albany), full of an experienced staff with the leading technology. The owner, Melissa has seen over 100,000 laser procedures, so I kind of like those odds and is one of the highest rated Spa’s in the City. Most importantly, after meeting with a few spa’s I felt most comfortable with Melissa – who made me feel right at home, answered all my questions, even the stupid ones without making me feel like an idiot and was super down to earth. So if I’m going to trust anyone with this procedure, it’s Deify!

*Must try brushes*

In future posts I’ll share more about my experiences with lots of detail, and answer all of your Laser Questions! I’ll also give you lots of opportunities to try Deify at a discount – so stay tuned! Until then, send me your questions via email at courtney@colormecourtney.com and use the subject line Let’s Get Lasered or leave a comment with your question below! I’m really excited to share this experience with you!

If you want to give Laser a whirl, you can use my 20% off coupon by going here, coupon code is COLORMECOURTNEY

Introducing, Solider’s hollow!new york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggings

Once upon a time, Solider’s Hollow was small Native American encampment and later, in the 1850’s, a stopover for a group of Army surveyors. Actually some pretty tragic stuff happened there, but sometimes history isn’t so pretty – I won’t get too into it but more recently (2002) Soldier Hollow was a place for healthy competition and celebration as it was grounds for the Winter Olympics! After the Olympics, they remained open as a place for cross country skiing, tubbing and a serious view!   new york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggings

While I was in Utah we ventured up (down? over? sorry I don’t know Utah geography – at all lol) to Solider’s Hollow for more outdoor winter activities and frozen fun (I’ll share them here, soon). These photos we’re taken on the balcony of the lodge, looking out on the cross country ski resort. While I was in Utah, I was forever memorized by how beautiful every inch of the snow covered state was – so much so, that people post their Utah photos on instagram with the hashtag beaUTAHful lol. I thought that was too corny, even for me, so I stuck with #utahisrad lol but click the hashtage (either one to see how pretty it is for yourself!new york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggingsnew york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggings

How cute is this sweater situation? I don’t wear Madewell that often, it’s a little too cool and trendy hipster for me and my style lol but thought it was super unique that I had to have it! It looks like it’s two pieces, but it’s actually one! It’s a great way to get the layered look with only one piece – which is great for a getaway with limited suitcase space (I refuse to check a bag!) because you only have to pack the sweater! I’m obviously not stick skinny lol so I sometimes have a hard time layering with chunky knits without looking chunky myself – this sweater helps me be cool and layered, without the weight gain that doubling up on the sweaters can do #scorenew york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggingsnew york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots

I paired it with Lululemon leggings and my go to over the knee boots! Honestly, I never understood the lulu hype, I was one of those people who was like “it’s just leggings” (don’t hate me) and never really understood why people paid $100 for leggings… I kins of think that leggings, tights, socks and underwear (and tampons) should be free lol so I hate spending money on them and buy the cheapest ones I can find – like I troll the $3 bin at forever 21 or search amazon for $5 tights and target for $2 tights … because, cheap! Also, I don’t work out that much or wear leggings on the reg, so I didn’t really ever feel the need to invest in a pair like that!new york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggingsnew york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggings

Anyways, my friend Whitney works at Lulu and it’s pretty much all she ever wears, so she swears by the stuff! She finally got me into a pair of leggings and I’m kind of obsessed – they fit like a glove, their high waisted and (the best part) dog hair brushes right off of them, so they are a must for Life with Waffles. I wore them all day and was warm enough even though it was like 20 degrees in Utah, and wore them under my Snow pants when we wen’t tubing about an hour after these were taken! Will I ever spend $100 on another pair of leggings, ehh idk, maybe not, but I do really really love these fullux high times and think investing in at-least one pair is totally worth it!new york fashion blogger fashion blogger nyc fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney black fashion blogger color me courtney color me courtney madewell snow outfit what to wear in snow what to wear when it snows winter outfit winter style what to wear in snow snow style winter style guide what to wear in winter madewell sweater stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots stuart weitzman boots lowland boots over the knee boots suede over the knee boots canada goose winter style winter outfit winter style canada goose how to wear a canada goose jacket how to wear over the knee boots how to wear a sweater and leggings how to wear over the knee boots with leggings

Snow Day Style Tricks!

28th January 2016

IMG_7606dIn Utah – everyday, is a snow day… yay!   IMG_7697IMG_7647 IMG_7664

I had such a blast in Utah, I literally rolled around in the snow like all day. because I’m from the west coat I turn into a seven year old whenever snow is involved – “OMG SNOW”!!

IMG_7645IMG_7669IMG_7714

But your snow day fun can be cut real short if you’re freezing (trust me I know) – although jeans and suede boots might be crazy cute for a snow day, snow pants, over fleece lined leggings with snow boots and two pairs of socks was a little more conducive to chilin‘ in this environment!IMG_7639IMG_7621IMG_7674

I basically lived in these snow pants in Utah! Perfect for tubing or making snow angles, you know all of those normal adult activities! Like I mentioned, I stayed warm by layering fleece lined leggings under my snow pants – you can get them on amazon for like next to nothing and the literally save me from freezing to death during the winter! I also took lots of cashmere sweaters on my trip, along with snow boats, beanies and a coat or two (or three or four) to keep me warm and toastie throughout our winter activities!IMG_7629IMG_7737

A Snowy, Striped Staircase

IMG_7008

Hello Utah!

Although I love living in New York and have recently become pretty clingy with the East Coast, I still love returning to the side of the country where I grew up (the for a little vacay! This week I’m in Utah for all of the s’s: skiing, Sundance, sledding, snow & sleep overs with my besties!IMG_6912IMG_6907

Have you met my Girl Group? We have Whitney – an ultra-glam makeup artist, cheer coach and Zumba instructor who’s very clingy with Lulu Lemon & all things athleisure; Kristin – a marketing maven in the making and performer extraordinaire who’s worked for notable names like J.crew and Disney… and not to mention she’s Color Me Courtney’s biggest fan & part-time employee (she’ll be helping me out with Fashion Week this year); and Sheree – a movie obsessed, Actress who knows anything and everything about the silver screen… and TV’s Teen Wolf. Anyways, when the three of us get together – it’s pretty Epic (with a capital E).IMG_7000

After high school and winning Miss Teen Arizona (NBD) Whitney moved to Utah for College – since then she’s lived in Portugal for two years, NYC for a Summer and now back to our home state of Arizona. Kristin was born in Cali (Calabasas actually, she’s basically a Kardasian, she even has the K!) but moved to AZ at age ten, when we met at our Dance Studio (I met Whit there two, around age seven), she spent three years traveling the world with Disney (and will leave again after Fashion Week) and spent last Summer in NYC too (it was the first time the four of us lived in the same place since 2008!) but now resides in Utah. Ree (Sheree) was born and raised in Arizona and we met in high school when we cheered together – after college in AZ she moved to New York a year after me for an acting conservatory program, but (sadly) moves back to West Coast after her stint in Utah … tear.IMG_6956IMG_7009

Anyways, Ree is in Utah working Sundance because #acting and Kristin is spending her last week here before she comes to NYC and then off globe trotting with Disney. I had to come to Utah for Sundance coverage and a few other projects and stories and Whit was overdue for a Utah rendezvous and had the week off of work, so it was super serendipitous that four of us would be together for the first time since last summer in this great state, Yay!!!!IMG_6962

Although there is definitely more work than play going on this trip, I’m also here working on a few fun snow stories and loving every second of this winter wonderland. Don’t get me wrong, it’s kind of crazy cold, but since we haven’t had any substantial snow days in NYC this season (although we might be getting some this weekend, yay) I’m soaking up all of the snow and slush Utah has to offer, and as a bonus enjoying the time with my Besties!IMG_6971IMG_6968

They’re so awesome – they turn into my CMC dream team when I’m here without Paris: helping with shoot ideas, taking my pictures, and trying to container our laugher for just long enough to get a photo or two. Although exploring a new state is always fun, honestly my best memories from our trip so far have been the hours spent in the car, jamming to One Direction, making fun of and ganging up on each other and not acting our age. Being with your besties on vacation is truly the BEST and one sure fire way to make you feel, #ForeverYoung!

West Village Wonderland

25th January 2016

IMG_7821Something Magical happened this weekend in New York City, we had a super special visitor named Jonas!IMG_7945IMG_7894

As you probably know, this weekend half of the country was hit with inches and inches of fresh powder! It snowed all day Saturday, and was the biggest blizzard I have ever seen. Some records indicate we got around 28 inches of snow! All I know is that when I went outside the next day, the fire hydrant by my apartment was covered in snow!IMG_7812IMG_7879IMG_7916

Being from Arizona, and not used to snow, Paris and I couldn’t resist stepping out into the storm to play a little and snap some pics on Saturday… not once but twice! The best part? It actually wasn’t that cold, just wet and blizzard-y! Either way, we had a blast!IMG_7823IMG_7882IMG_7846

The Red Coat I wore was particular warm, I literally only wore a long sleeve shirt (not even a sweater) underneath and I was totally fine! I did double up on socks though to keep me warm inside my rain boots, that I subbed for snow boots!IMG_7804IMG_7938

Dress, Dress, Dress

23rd January 2016

IMG_6302Let’s talk dresses & dressing for any occasion!

Dresses are one of the flirtiest things a woman can own, and their also crazy functional two. If you find the perfect dress, you can take it from desk to drinks, work to weekend, and even work out to going out in a snap by making a few easy adjustments. Everyone needs a dress (or two, or three) like in their wardrobe that is more than meets the eye and can be worn in so many ways.IMG_6413

It’s no surprise that all my favorite dresses are from Boden – I mean they kind of always fit the bill! Bright colors? Check, bold patterns? check, classic, crazy fun and high quality? check check check! It’s been my go-to stop for affordable dresses for any occasion – the office, brunch with my girlfriends or a weekend exploring the West Village (New York City) and today I’ll show you how I can dress to impress for any occasion in these surprisingly affordable dress styles (all under $100!)

To the OfficeIMG_6400 IMG_6416
Working in New York is unlike working in any other city – you have your corporate fashion girls usually dressed in oversized black with a side of black, your corporate corporate girls who work in sales or something else really impressive that rise early in blazers and high heels and your PR girls who (if they work somewhere cool) have a more casual chic vibe going on with denim flares and maybe hipster glasses – my point? It’s really easy to get into a routine, and stay in one. But dressing for the office doesn’t have to be a drag, on the contrary I think it’s something to be celebrated, liberated even! IMG_6389You spend more time at the office then you will anywhere else – so why not bring a cool, quirky or colorful element to your corporate style! A color blocked dress and bold blue tights can do just that – playing on black and blue keeps in chic but also unexpected, while tassel heels add something playful and the conservative silhouette keeps things office appropriate !IMG_6442

To BrunchIMG_6322IMG_6354
In New York, everyone does brunch – it’s like kind of a big deal, and hey, there’s lots of food (and avocado toast) involved so I’m always in! Keep in mind – brunch can easily turn to an afternoon of sight seeing, some serious shopping or even a bubbly induced saunter down your favorite street. Bottom line is, you have to be prepared, and a patterned shift dress does the trick! It’s loose nature gives you some room to “grow” after you’ve ate your way though a much needed catch-up session with the Charlotte to your Carrie – “I haven’t seen you in like two whole weeks!! Tell, Me, EVERYTHING!”. IMG_6303 Plus the printed nature of the frock is light, fun and makes us think ’Spring even when bracing freezing temps. Since New York has yet to thaw out, red tights, a little beret hat and a cozy grey coat will keep you snug as a bug while you and your girlfriend(s) cut a rug! And speaking of dancing, a comfortable, low heel will help for whatever shenanigans you get into post pancakes!IMG_6338

(Cheers) To the Freaking Weekend!IMG_6493 IMG_6485
I spend most weekend mornings wandering my New York City Neighborhood with or without my French Bulldog Waffles and just taking it all in (and by all in I mean coffee, and croissants and bagels and cream cheese … of course). When things warm up a bit, I dare to go bare – Bare legs, and a T-shirt dress for a cute and comfy weekend style! Layering a shearling lined hoodie, under a bright jacket is an easy way to stay warm up top, and adding sneakers keeps things casual but also cute for your morning weekend walk! IMG_6459Ladies – say no to sweat pants and opt for T-shirt dress – even if you’re hiding under a baseball hat and oversized sunnies because who know’s you might even run into that hansom neighbor on his Saturday morning coffee run to the corner bodega at 9:45ish … that you haven’t been semi-stalking what so ever!IMG_6457

Skating into the next chapter

20th January 2016

So today I have some kind of serious news to share with you guys, I’ll be talking about my life for the past year or so and sharing a big secret! Don’t worry, it’s all good news and I hope you’ll be as excited about everything as I am! But before I share, we have to understand where I came from and how we got here, it’s kind of a long and bumpy ride so buckle up and read on (or if you want to skip it, jump down to “And Now ….” below!)

Back Then …
On almost this day exactly (I think it was the 20th) two years ago I was a little down. I had moved to New York nearly a year prior (2013) with a roommate who left within the week, after living on a couch for a month I finally found an apartment and sent for Waffles (who was staying with my mom in Arizona until I had a place).

During that year I worked three different jobs for three different brands and probably only knew threeish people in the city. After realizing I wanted to leave marketing and store operations (where I had resided previously and had work experience within) for a role in merchandising, I took what felt like step backwards in my career in hoping to land my big break in a a seriously tough city (I wasn’t blogging at the time, I had had blogs before, nothing serious – mostly just cataloging my life for my Grandma to read #mybiggestfan).

On this day(ish) I sat with Paris (who had just moved here) at a coffee shop near Times Square defeated – having just left my third job of the year and not knowing what I was planning to do next. He asked me, “Well – if you could have any job in the world, right now, what would it be” I replied, “I want to work for a brand with a clear history and story, a brand going through a transition – something that will be a challenge. I want to be part of the change that they’re going through.” After some more thought/discussion I stated, “the current dream job, would be merchandising at Coach! They’re going through a brand transformation – I want to be a part of it!” To which Paris responded, “well… then do that!”… lol like it was that simple or something. I had been applying for corporate fashion jobs but in New York it’s honestly all “who you know” – most jobs never even get posted and if they do, and if you apply and if you haven’t really worked here or are from the west coast or didn’t go to an East Coast school you’re lucky if your resume even gets printed out, let alone seen by anyone who matters.

Anyways – I had taken a marketing roll at another fashion brand right (now my thirdish after being at Kate Spade for a few years followed by Tommy Hilfiger, Jonathan Adler) and after the first of the year, I didn’t love it, the brand was on a down turn (It actually went under last year, sad face) so I kind of sort of liked that challenging part I guess, but I really just took the job for security while I figured my life out lol #thestruggle.

Meanwhile, I applied for my first merchandising role later that week – but i went above and beyond with my application, I threw my cover letter out the window (buh-bye) and made an editorial-esqu piece in somewhat of an article formation that showcased my knowledge and passion for the brand and it’s new direction – It was kind of what I had done in blogs before, with a dash of playing around on polyvore and a smidgen of what I learned from my professional english certificate in undergrad and my Graduate marketing studies (I have degrees in Marketing). I completed applications for both Coach and Tory Burch who had open roles in merchandising asking for 2+ years of merch experience (that I totally didn’t have but whatever) and one for J.crew, because, J.crew (who didn’t have open roles); I spent a day or two on each. I also watched a documentary on Mickey Drexler (King of J.Crew and a branding super star, he does amazing things to brands, look him up), it was 3 am, I had eaten a whole bag of sour patch and I was a little manic, so I thought, hmm I’m gonna email Mickey – which is essentially an aspiring model emailing Giselle, a wanna be politician tweeting Barack or a amateur Chef calling up Gordon Ramsey – it’s kind of insane. I literally guessed his email, thinking, “hmm if I was him, I would make my email XYZ” – I’m gonna omit it to protect his privacy – before passing out on my couch with my laptop on my leg and candy in my hair #classy. I was so surprised when the next morning, a mere three hours later, I awoke to a response… LIKE WHAT! He loved what I did and connected me to someone in J.crew to interview for a role… once again, WHAT!

The next week, the most crazy banana things happened, I not only interviewed on a lunch break for J.Crew (who didn’t have any open roles, it was just a “Hello, we like you” phone interview, where they tried to sell me on J.Crew …. like I needed any selling lol) and two days later I interviewed at the “dream job”, Coach. After three interviews over a month (all during “doctors appointments” and lunch breaks) gosh, my new/old job probably thought I was crazy, including one with the head of Merch at Coach, Coach picked me! I was the New Girl in Merch! When I gave my two week notice at my new/old job, they didn’t want me to stay two weeks and felt I was going to a competitor so I left that day… yikes! Around the same time I attended my first Fashion Week with a photographer friend (since I now had two free weeks) and ramped up my blogging efforts! I started actually taking blogging seriously because I was inspired and fueled by all the amazingness that had just happened (I had around a thousand Instagram followers at the time, and I knew 900 of them lol).

So you landed your dream job – but it’s actually not your dream job…
I guess I didn’t know what I wanted! After a few months on the job, I knew Merchandising wasn’t a fit for me, honestly the job wasn’t what I thought it would be (I don’t think I really understood merchandising at the time) and I wasn’t as good at it as I thought I would be – which is hard for a perfectionist to say, but I loved being at Coach – I just needed something more creative and something that wasn’t out of my wheel house. Sure, I could have “learned” merchandising but it wasn’t ever going to be what I was meant to do, hence why I wasn’t as awesome at it as I wanted to be.

When I was about to leave Coach and return to the drawing board (I started interviewing again lol), someone on the Product Development team asked me to switch departments and come on over, and my life really did change – I then started developing handbags for both retail and outlet and although I didn’t design them, I brought them from conception to commercialization.

If you asked me in school if I wanted to create product I would have laughed at you – I wanted to sell product, introduce it to customers, create content for it and bring it to life on a consumer level after someone had already brought it into the world. I wanted to be part of the story, not the inception… but there I was, becoming a part of this historic brand transformation in helping develop the new and improved Coach… and loving every second of it!

We became “not your mother’s Coach”. Coach had kind of fallen behind in fashion, the quality was always there but they were chasing trends instead of creating them – but during my time there (not at all because of me lol, I was just lucky to be apart of it and had really good/well planned timing) they turned things around, started showing at Fashion week and worked tirelessly to creating killer product (some that you haven’t seen yet and when you do it will blow your mind).

Today, if you walk through a Coach store, I can point out the bags that were my basically my babies, that I helped create, that I partnered with design to develop, that I worked with our factories to perfect. I loved my job, I really did – I loved the people I worked with, the product I made and all of the pieces (good and bad) of my 9 to 5 – I was a small part in building one brand by day and spent the night (and early morning) building Color Me Courtney by night.

  Working 5 to 9…
I didn’t miss the marketing and branding because I was working over time to BYOB – Build my Own Brand/Business and make Color Me Courtney what it is today. It wasn’t easy, but I loved my Hannah Montana Life (I was Courtney by day and Color Me Courtney by night … sometimes all night lol). The last 6 months of 2015 were especially tough – I slept on average 3 hours a night and pulled at least one all nighter a week (if you follow me on snap chat, you’re used to my 3am dance sessions to help me power through lol #yourewelcome). I gave up all of my hobbies, weekends and free time and dedicated it to the blog #fortheblog because I was juggling two full time jobs, there wasn’t even time to sleep let alone go to brunch with the girls.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I LOVED doing both even if I had to give up sleep and my social life lol – that’s why I did it for so long! After living in denial, the time has come to be honest with myself – I can’t do both, it’s not sustainable to sleep 10ish hours a week lol and I have the bags under my eyes to prove it #theyredesigner, I was always getting sick and feeling awful plus I felt like I couldn’t give either of my jobs the 3000% they both deserved. I had to pick one – be Courtney or Color Me Courtney because being both wasn’t working anymore.

 And Now …
So with a seriously heavy heart, I had to say goodbye to the unexpected “dream job” of being a product developer at Coach that Courtney came to love so much, and make the room, time and effort for Color Me Courtney to focus on building her Color Me Empire 😉 full time! It was tough but it had to be done – and now I’m even more inspired and dedicated to creating killer content and instilling serious confidence in my readers.

Let’s rewind …
I think a lot of people outside the blogging world think running a site is easy, and all bloggers do is shop, take ice cream pics and smile for the camera. While all of that is part of it (and would be with or without Color Me Courtney, because sprinkles) I only wish it was that easy. I consider myself and my site a brand, and treat it just like I would any client if I was representing them on a PR and marketing level – but the stakes are so much higher because I’m lucky enough to have loyal followers who deserve nothing but the best. I have to remain protective of my brand; only working with other brands and organizations that align with me and my message. I basically have to be my own CEO, CMO, CFO, editor in chief, brand strategist, PR department, and everything else, oh and model lol jk you guys know I’m not a model, I just dance and Paris takes pictures haha ! Don’t get me wrong – this isn’t vogue (LOL) and never will be, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have serious goals for Color Me Courtney or take it seriously (or haven’t in the past) but I’m now able to take things to the next level – especially in the content department!

My background is kind of odd. My dad is wicked smart, and the hardest working person, like ever. He has a doctorate in math – WHO DOES THAT – unless you’re insane. He’s basically a walking calculator. He built his business from nothing and (perhaps) the most impressive part is every time he reaches a level where he could walk away and sell or retire, he invests everything he has into something new and builds another, some how taking it to another level. it’s kind of crazy. My mom (aside from being the best person on this planet, seriously, all my friends agree they’ve never met someone so giving and inspiring) was a PR power house in the eighties #bighairdontcare, and became a stay at home mom when we were born … But not really cause she started building her interior design company, also from nothing. Now she does design, has another full time job and makes awesome diy projects in her spare time, like a airport bar cart she restored like it was nothing. She is dual parts creative and hard working and forever my inspiration #thanksmom and my younger brother ? So smart, so crazy smart in the most unconventional way. He’s as corny as Drake lol but maybe a little bit cooler (maybe), but he reads EVERYTHING, and retains info like no one else, he’s currently #byob-ing & working on two insanely innovative projects that will probably change the world – literally they’re that amazing, I wish I could tell you about it but it’s too advanced for me and I couldn’t even explain it if I tried lol. Oh and in his spare time, he works with homeless people and has them help him pick up trash in Arizona and when they do, he buys them meals. YEAH HE IS AWESOME.

So with a family like this – I really had no choice, I had to find my own way to try and make some awesomeness happen, somehow right? I ended up attending ASU for undergrad and graduating in two and a half years with undergrad degrees in business marketing and business tourism, plus certificates in professional writing and accounting. Then I went to grad school and did my MBA in a year at San Francisco state, earning a dual emphasis graduate degree in business studying luxury marketing and sustainability. I’m so thankful for my education, it’s really the best gift I ever received and now I get to use bits and pieces of it everyday at Color Me Courtney

  #BYOB
So after a week of being my own boss I’ve learned so much about myself, my work ethic and my personal goals. I honestly thought it would be hard for me to not sleep past noon and keep up with emails, I mean I’m driven but I’ve never had this kind of freedom. It was the opposite, I worked harder than I ever have. I sent 3800 emails (I know bananas), developed ideas and secured partnerships for 17 different collaborative stories, had six meetings, went to one networking event and pulled three all nighters. I also watched four episodes of two broke girls and one of dance moms but who’s counting…

But wait, there’s more! I want to share every second with you, so I’ll be launching #BYOB(BB) – build your own business, blog, brand – a new segment where I’ll catalog what I learn along the way, share blog, business and branding tips and answer your questions ! I’ve been meaning to do something like this for like ever and I’ll finally have the time to create it and execute it the way I’ve always wanted to!

The best part? This is just the beginning ! So if you liked what you saw in 2015, get ready for a bold and bright year full of my best content yet as we take things to a whole other level! I honestly can’t thank you guys enough for following my yellow brick road of sprinkle colored craziness, it wouldn’t be half as fun without you along for the ride :)

I have so many amazing things in store for 2016 that I can’t wait to focus on – I promise to dream bigger, aim higher (Kristin), dress brighter (can you imagine?), inspire more and party harder (and by party, I mean eat sprinkles and dance like no one is watching lol) than I ever have before.

But I guess the point of this story is this…
1 – Live your dreams – Corny, I know but honestly none of this craziness would have happened to me if I didn’t reach for the stars and push myself beyond my limits.
2 – Want It All – Please know that it’s okay to have more than one dream or goal, and to pursue them all! Coach was always the dream I thought i wanted, but along the way I found the need to create something that was my own, a bright little spot on the web that might not change the world or become a billion dollar leather goods retailer, but could at least be a place for positivity and light, and what’s more fulfilling than that!? So yeah, you can have it all – even if they bring you on two (or three or four) totally different paths!
3 – Say thank you – I have to say thank you to my crazy supportive friends, my family, Paris (who I couldn’t do this without), my entrepreneur parents and brother who inspire me everyday and (perhaps most importantly) you guys. You guys are the reason I create – to inspire and promote positivity and confidence… And now; you guys are the reason I get out of bed every morning, the reason I was able to turn my passion into my business and the reason I get to call having the time of my life “work.”

Weekend Chic

16th January 2016

 Cheers to the freakin’ weekend!

Weekend wear has to be comfy and chic – you know, yo keep up with your busy schedule of brunch, Netflix and sprinkles with more sprinkles on top.

Most of my weekends are spent hanging with my boys (Paris and Waffles) and shooting! Sometimes we wander through soho (pictured) or stop by the dog park! Other days we will explore a new part of the city or try out a restaurant on our list.

I usually start Saturdays and Sundays with a little walk, but sometimes it turns into endless adventures like finding the best Pizza in our neighborhood or hunting for the perfect instgram photo – you know, the usual! This outfit is perfect for all of the above, comfy (fleece lined) legging, a crazy cute coat, fly kick (lol) and a red baseball cap … because lets be real, I don’t brush my hair on the weekends lol.

IMG_6290 Dear Pantone, I love you lots, but today I love you more because you choose to go color crazy this year with your choices for color of the year!IMG_6274IMG_6224

Choosing the color of the year has to be a daunting task, and honestly for the best few years I haven’t been too sitter – but this year I’m Color-Me-Crazy for the cotton candy colored hues that pantone has selected: Rose Quartz and SerenityIMG_6286IMG_6278

I know what you’re thinking – “pastels for winter? No, It can’t work, why are you doing this to us, Pantone!!!” The better question is Why the heck Not! Why Not switch things up this season, if you’re anything like me – your winter wardrobe probably needs a little remix anyways!IMG_6209IMG_6248

Dressing for winter can be totally tough, it’s cold, coats are big and honestly things get really uninspiring really quick. My trick? Take those spring trends you saw on the runway last Fall Fashion Week and make them work for Winter. Getting a jump on the hottest spring trends puts you ahead of the game and gives your wardrobe a big refresh!IMG_6230

I think the easiest way to do this is Color! Trends come and go, but dipping your toe into a pool of color can be an easy way to test out something chic for the season without over committing.IMG_6261IMG_6214

Oh and if these colors aren’t quite your cup of tea, don’t fret! There are so many more colors and trends for you to try on for style size this season, and even a few more lessons to learn from seasons past!IMG_6252IMG_6240

Todays look is really simple, yet super special. I took a black turtle neck and black tights, used them both as a base a built from there! I layered on two levels of pink and two layers of blue, both with different tones (one dark and one light)!IMG_6254
