Wedding Ready

28th September 2016

As you guys know (because I can’t stop telling you), I’m heading to my best friend’s wedding at the end of the month and I’m just so excited!

img_4891

This is not only the first time I get to be a bridesmaid in general, but also one of the first times someone really close to me is getting married, so I’m pretty pumped. I’ve been planning out the details for what feels like forever, from my dress to my shoes to my hair to my makeup … and now, since we’re in the home stretch, it’s time to talk gifts! My friend Emily and I met back when I lived in SF – we became fast friends after we started working together at Kate Spade about 5 years ago. She’s a girly girl with a style very similar to my own. Both she and her future husband live in San Francisco, where they LOVE to cook, eat and entertain, so wedding shopping has been super fun. Naturally, I went to Macy’s! Most people are registered there and truthfully, even if they aren’t they have such an amazing selection (and always have great promotions) that you can’t lose.Whether you stop by Macys.com or have a chance to visit the giant, magical storefront in Herald Square (aka my happy place), shopping at Macy’s is always an awesome experience for me. For Em, I picked up this polka dot vase along with a few more must have pieces for entertaining and cooking. Although her future hubby might not flip for the vase the way she will, he’ll enjoy the cooking essentials I picked up from their registry.

I’m not the best at following directions, so although I like to reference the registry and maybe pick up something small from there, I also like to go rogue and pick out something on my own. When I’m shopping for wedding gifts, my rule is to pick out something practical with personality. Things like a brightly colored blender, a patterned vase, cool coasters, and a unique cutting board set are always sure to wow. Think of something that everyone needs (and maybe already has) and upgrade the order by going above and beyond – if you splurge on that red crockpot instead of the basic black one, or that retro-inspired toaster that matches their kitchen aesthetic, you provide the couple with an instant upgrade all while proving that you really know them. For me, shopping for these wedding gifts at Macy’s and online was a fun and emotional experience that didn’t break the bank! Right now at Macy’s, you can save an extra 15% off a registry with code WEDDING during the entire month of September. I usually like to over gift, by selecting two things under $25 and then maybe one splurge option around $100 – but if you’re looking to spend a little more, or a little less, Macy’s has you covered! Check out all of the awesome gifts you can get at different price points; these are just a few things I found on the registry gift idea selection at Macys.com, there are so many more pretties waiting for you online and in store!

macysLet’s face it, an appliance isn’t always the most personal present, but when you explore some of the hidden gems found at a mega store like Macy’s, you can raise the wedding bar and get your bride and groom something they not only need, but will also love!

fullsizerender-12This just in, I’m kind of curvy (lol but you totes knew that right).fullsizerender-13fullsizerender-14

I love my body and don’t feel the need to change it (if I did, I would just hardcore hit the gym, obvi) but that doesn’t mean I don’t have “trouble” points. For me, it’s my tummy! It’s not flat, and probably never will be so you’ll usually find me showing off my smallest point (my waist) with a fit and flare dress.     fullsizerender-16 I love a good fit and flare, but that doesn’t mean I don’t crave a pretty pencil skirt! They can be both professional and flattering depending on how you wear them, but not always pooch friendly if you’re a donut obsessed non-skinny mini like me. But don’t fret, I’ve found the perfect pencil skirt that will hide your trouble tummy and make you look hashtag flawless.fullsizerender-17img_3393

I wore this skirt to fashion week (and about 100 other times) this year because it’s so dang flattering. The knot lets you tie your waist tight and show it off as your smallest point, while the extra fabric hides any flub or post brunch food baby. No lie, I ate pasta and a burger for the lunch right before this photo was taken, can you tell?fullsizerender-20

If the answer is no, then this skirt is doing it’s job. It’s now by far my fav pencil skirt and a great basic for my wardrobe, woot! I styled it with other body flattering pieces, like this off the shoulder orange shirt that helped to create the hourglass illusion, and fun cage shoes that draw your eye to my legs!fullsizerender-19

How to you Hue

26th September 2016

fullsizerender-6With fall in full swing, I can’t help be equally excited, and depressed. fullsizerenderThe excitement comes from layers, coats, tights and pumpkin flavored everything, but the depression comes from the inherent lack of color – boo. For Autumn, everyone starts wearing black, grey, and brown and replay, but not this girl! I hope you’ll join me in the color revolution by inserting some bold colors into your wardrobe!fullsizerender-2 fullsizerender-4fullsizerender-8

The easiest way to do this, is with a bold pop of color – enter Hue – your go to source for color-me-legwear sure to brighten up even the darkest of wardrobes. If you love wearing black? Brighten up your look with bright tight or a statement sock! Obsessed with booties? Give your go to pair a makeover with a little polka dot power! Is your style preppy yet chic? Channel your inner Blair Waldorf with red tights and a circle skirt. And what if you’re a more casual, cool girl? Hue has you covered with bold leggings to wear with your favorite slouchy sweater.fullsizerender-3fullsizerender-9fullsizerender-5

Any way you rock the look, you can add a bit of color to your otherwise B&W wardrobe for a brighter fall! Today I channeled my inner color-me-DJ and combined my Frends headphones in a cool teal color with the cutest little teal purse. To bring the funk, I elevated boring black booties with sheer polka dot socks, it’s an easy trick to not only make your shows more fun but also slim your legs and ankles!

fullsizerender-10

So what do you say? Ready to add some color to your fall?! If yes (fingers crossed) pop to my instagram for a fun giveaway and a chance to get started!

Fun Sized for Fall

20th September 2016

fullsizerender-3Hellloooo Fall! Ever since the calendar struct September, I have had fall styling on my mind.fullsizerender-8

My dreams have been filed with fall favorites OTK boots, to burgundy dresses and everything in between – now all I need is the weather to match!fullsizerender-2 fullsizerender-4

For today’s post we’re talking fall essentials for the fun sized gal (#me). At 5’1 and 135 I consider myself curvy but petite, so sometimes shopping normal sizes can be a problem. For most of my life, I would shop normal sizes and wonder why I was having such an issue with fit – well the answer was simple, I was too small! Going down a size doesn’t always work when your torso, legs, arms and everything else are shorter than the average gal, so referring to things like the Macy’s Petite Fit Guide can really help steer you in the right direction when you’re shopping online. Now I switch to petite sizing when I can, to pick up some pieces that don’t need altering, yay! I love that Macy’s gives you the option for petite sizing with INC International Concepts, Alfani, Style&Co, Charter Club, NY Collection, JM Collection, and some of their essential brands.   fullsizerender-5 img_4199When building your fall wardrobe, you have to get your hands on a few things:img_4253

A Floral Dress I live in dresses all year long (even winter) but your styling and selection has to change when the seasons do. For summer, I stick to bright colors, graphic patterns and fit and flare styles; but for fall I’m all about a tighter fit or wrap dress in a darker hue and smaller floral print!fullsizerender-7

Over The Knee Boots – If you need me, I’ll be wearing boots (specifically ones of the OTK variety) until fall. When paired with the right petite look, these can do wonders for your size deficiency. I mean, come on, do I look 5’5 here or what!? When I’m pairing this trend with must have trends like a floral dress or a line skirt, fit is everything so I have to shop petite and really pay attention to hem lines, making sure to leave that one inch gap between where my dress ends and the boots begin

fullsizerender-6Leather Jacket – A statement jacket is a must for every season (even summer night, duh) so every fall I invest in something new and now. Your jacket doesn’t have to be a splurge, Macy’s has so many awesome options from faux leather to terry blazers and even suede that you can get for a major steal and style with your transitional or fall pieces.img_4200

New Pair of Jeans – New season, new jeans – right? Right! I love the distressed denim look, but it’s not so practical for fall; when that breeze hits you don’t want it going through your tears and up and down your legs, burr! This dark washed skinny pair from Style&Co a la Macy’s is the perfect alternative. It has the cool distressed hem detail without all of the ventilation, plus it’s a petite, curvy fit so it’s like they were made for me! With the hem trend on style for fall, I have to shop petite, because a style like this couldn’t be taken to the tailor without ruining the detail in the alteration.fullsizerender-11

Something Transitional – I’m not sure who said white after labor day was a bad idea, but I want to find them, hunt them down and give them a serious talking to. I so don’t believe in this fashion “rule” and find myself wearing white in different ways year around. For the first signs of fall, a Style & Co Petite lacey off white blouse and denim are a great transitional look to get you in the swing of the season. Plus they’ll become awesome basics for next spring too!fullsizerender-9

For me the best part about shopping at a store like Macy’s either online or at a store front is the selection in both styles and sizing. I love having a one stop shop for all my fall essentials, so when you’re shopping for fall you might also need some of these seasonal must havesfullsizerender

More Must Haves:
A good suede bag to help amp up some of your pieces for fall
– A vampy lip (like a cranberry or plum color)
Some soft sweaters (say yes to cashmere) to stay snuggly all fall
Wide leg pant: I haven’t given this one a whirl yet but it’s everywhere this season. If you’re fun sized you’ll need to shop petite and wear it with a pump for added height!

NYFW with Mary Kay

17th September 2016

fullsizerender-31NYFW (New York Fashion Week) is a kind of a crazy time for everyone in New York related to the Fashion Industry. If you follow a few bloggers on instagram, I’m sure you’ve noticed a recent influx of street style looks, #nyfw posts and runway photos from the week to ring in the next season of style.fullsizerender-32fullsizerender-36I love Fashion Week, and this year was extra exciting for me because I was honored to be able to attend with Mary Kay! Fashion week has become this crazy time where brands invest so much time and money to put on these shows that showcase somewhat unattainable standards. Everything from hair, to makeup and even clothes is over the top, and don’t get me wrong, that makes for a really good show – but doesn’t always translate to something wearable. As a blogger, my job is to bring you trends that you can actually tackle in your real life – and sometimes that can be challenging to do with all the smoke and mirrors. So when I got the chance to work Mary Kay, an amazing lifestyle brand that can help enhance your everyday beauty routine, I jumped at it.fullsizerender-41fullsizerender-30

So many women use Mary Kay in their homes, but I don’t think they realize the high fashion value that can go along with these products. For products to be used and stand out on a runway or fashion presentation, they have to be able to pack a pretty serious punch – and Mary Kay’s current line does just that. This year they we’re the masters behind the make up for the Project Runway Finale show and the Tracy Reese presentation, which I’ll be showing you today.fullsizerender-34fullsizerender-35

Mary Kay took me backstage at Tracy Reese to see all of the madness before the magic. It was chaotic to say the least – picture about 50 or more people, camera crews, make up artists, hair stylists, models, designers, bloggers and more crammed into a little exposed brick room trying not to step all over each other. For me, I was floored that the Mary Kay team could create such beauty out of this chaos and loved watching them work.fullsizerender-33fullsizerender-37

Mary Kay had a unique (but awesome) challenge this year, because Tracy Reese choose to use a combination of both real people and models for her presentation. So the makeup had to work for all faces, bone structures and skin tones – not just your typical model look. They rose to the occasion, creating dreamy ethereal makeup perfect for the garden party showing. The dewy faces, pastel eyes and sheer lips created a dramatic, yet wearable look to compliment Tracy Reese’s romantic collection for Spring 2017.fullsizerender-38fullsizerender-28

Get The Look with Mary Kay Makeup:
Here’s a breakdown of how they created these gorgeous makeup looks.

Start with  Foundation Primer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15* then layer  CC Cream Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15* to even complexion. For those who needed it (that would be me), they use the Undereye Corrector to neutralize dark circles, and Perfecting Concealer is used to cover blemishes. My Glam Squad team used the under eye corrector on me as well and now I’m hooked! For foundation, the artists used  Mineral Powder Foundation is dusted over t-zone to minimize shine, but kept those cheekbones untouched for a natural glow and look, I love that Mary Kay artists helped celebrate the natural beauty of each model! Mineral Cheek Color in Shy Blush was applied to apples of cheeks, then faded up to temples, this is where they got that rosy glow before it faded into the eyes.  Cream Eye Color in Pale Blush is was swept over the lid with a dense synthetic brush, with Mineral Eye Color in Spun Silk and Honey Spice applied over top. I’m a big fan of the Cream Eye Color after my Glam Squad team used it on me – it’s pigmented enough to make a statement but feels light and blends like a dream. Next, Mineral Eye Color in Hazelnut was applied at the crease and along bottom lash line before Lash Love® Lengthening Mascara is applied to lashes, with concentration at the base. For lips (my favorite) they used this Gel Semi-Matte Lipstick in Always Apricot was pressed on to lips for a stained effect – it looked so natural yet bold enough to show up in a presentation!fullsizerender-29

There was no short supply of rose colored hues, floral prints, sheer detailing or girly twists to the collection and the makeup. Coincidentally, I fit in quite well with a golden smokey eye Glam Squad created for me using Mary Kay ‘Limited Edition Runway Bold’ collection eyeshadow pallet and my flowy floral dress. I had the honor of attending quite a few shows and presentations this year, but this was one of my favorites – it was so real, authentic and relatable, I walked away thinking I could wear those looks (hair and makeup included) right off the runway in real life, without looking like a crazy person.fullsizerender-40img_3925

Although high fashion is an exaggeration, it’s always so refreshing to me when brands push the envelope and use real people, wearable styles and relatable makeup. It’s ironic, because in fashion, it’s actually considered abnormal, to be normal, and using real bodies that actually reflect the vast majority of our population is somewhat unheard of, even tho we’re the people purchasing the clothes or replicating the looks. It’s always felt somewhat backwards to be, so I loved to be apart of Mary Kay and Tracy Reese’s journey to really challenge the status quo and make a show for the many rather than the few. It helped celebrate everyone’s individual beauty and uniqueness in a fun, flirty and fashion forward way and I couldn’t be prouder to have been part of this journey.fullsizerender-39

Mary Kay Must Haves: If you’re looking to try something new in the beauty department, I’ve got you covered with my top picks from Mary Kay.
Try a Cream Shadow to create the perfect smokey eye
– Strong brow gel to tame the natural mane or brighten up a bold brown
Gel-Semi Matte Lipstick that walks the line between a creamy, light lip and a harsh, bold matte one for a perfect combo to take you from day to night

fullsizerender-3It’s Fall, It’s Fall (Well it’s September and to me thats close enough).img_2374fullsizerender-18Fall is FUN! Layering, Pumpkin Spice everything, BLANKET SCARFS, gee I love it all.fullsizerender-8fullsizerender-4

I also love getting all nerdy in collegian inspired attire a la Gap Factory! Not sure why that when the leaves changes I go full on Rory Gilmore, but I do and I’m glad. I read more in the fall (tbh I mostly reread Harry Potter), layer more, and this year (for the second year in a row)  I find myself watching Gilmore Girls again from the beginning. I guess doing so has awoken my inner Rory and inspired my style, hence this outfit.img_2373fullsizerender-6

Today’s look is a Rory twist on back to school cool, I’m pretending I’m attending Harvard in 2005 (even tho we all know Rory ended up at Yale, but #same). Even if you didn’t go Ivy League, you can score some East-Coast inspired basics to rebuild your fall wardrobe (like me) at Gap Factory!fullsizerender-5photo-aug-29-12-26-11-pmimg_2377

I love that Gap Favorite has that great Gap feel for an even better price, #score. I picked up everything I needed as the baseline for my fall wardrobe, a new pair of Jeans, a great blazer (in a great fall color), and a new striped shirt. Because blazers and stripes are classic, but my style  is more “classic with a twist”, my twist came in the form of a leopard pointed flat to shake things up – not sure if thats’ the same choice Rory would have made fashion wise, but I’m sure she would support my choice to go against the norm 😉fullsizerender-17fullsizerender-7

At home with HerRoom

16th September 2016

img_3723Want to know a secret? Some days go to work in my Pajamas (like these floral cuties from HerRoom), shhh don’t tell my boss 😉fullsizerender-23fullsizerender-17

The bathroom in my apartment is teeny tiny, so I spend most mornings and nights getting ready in my bedroom at my vanity, while dripping in floral jammies. fullsizerender-26    I love my mirrored vanity, and this corner of the bedroom has become my happy place. Not only do I use it to primp, but I also use it as a desk. Sometimes you need a little change of scenery when you work at home, often alone. So my vanity works double duty as a desk. I don’t mind the small space, in fact I find it cozy especially when I’m snuggled up in my favorite Pajamas and bralettes from HerRoom. fullsizerender-20fullsizerender-27

In case you didn’t know, this time last year I had two jobs – a product developer making handbags at Coach and running Color Me Courtney! Come January, I left Coach to focus on Color Me Courtney full time and my life kind of changed. Not only was I able to work on growing my once hobby into my now career, my day to day activities also shifted. Where I used to wake up at 7, shoot content and then run to work at 9 where I would stay until 6 or 7 then run off to an event, now my day to day schedule is a little different.

fullsizerender-19fullsizerender-15

When you work from home your dress code is a little different from the average 9-5, and it varies from day to day! Today I’ll share a little bit about my schedule and my “work wear” wardrobe. fullsizerender-21

Since I’m my own boss I have to structure my days differently – as a result I have about 3 “out of office” days a week, those are days where I’m out location scouting, attending meetings, shooting, working with brands, previewing collections, spending time at show rooms, going to events and so on. Those days are unique, because I’m usually away from my laptop most of the day – if you ever work offsite, you know how hard it can be and how doing so can make a long day even longer. On those days I usually rise around 5 to tackle emails, photo editing, social content for the day or anything else that needs to be handled that day – in some cases I won’t be home (aside from coming back to check on waffles every 2-3 hours) until 6 or 7 so I have to get it all done ahead of time. These are my longer days, because once I’m home, I’m working on blog content, mood boards, drafts, photo editing and any important emails that came through during the day. For days like these, I’ll wearing anything from a nice dress and heels, to a suit depending on what kind of meeting I have on the horizon. When I’m scouting, I keep it simple with sneakers because I’ll be doing a lot of walking and carrying my camera. The second I get home, I get comfy – slipping into pajamas or loungewear to just relax!fullsizerender-25

For the ”other days” when I’m not doing any of the above, I’m working from my “office” aka my apartment. Not going to lie, these are my favorite days because I get to spend the most time with my dog, Waffles. These days start at 6 or so, so I get to sleep in a little which is nice, then I’m basically bonding with my computer all day – answering To be honest, I don’t really wear makeup these days to give my face a break and usually just wear my hair in a top knot. Unless I have an errand to run that can’t wait for my “out of office” days, I spend most of my “in office” days in my pajamas, so I’ve started to invest more in must have loungewear! If I’m sitting all day, I like to be comfy, cute and most importantly, high quality, like the floral set I’m wearing from HerRoom.fullsizerender-22

One of my favorite and must have items for anyone who works at home is a bralette, and herroom has THE BEST selection! I’ll be honest, I don’t want to wear a bra if I don’t have to, but I also want some kind of support. A bralette offers a comfy option with enough coverage and support to make you feel confident enough to run an errand or open the door for the mail man, while staying comfy! Even if you don’t work from home, you need one for weekends at home, or to wear under a slouchy sweater for running errands or heading to brunch – I’m wearing mine under my Pajama set!fullsizerender-18

Kate Spade recently launched a pajama collection and I’m just obsessed with it – now I’ve been been living in their PJs the for my office days. I also recently discovered HerRoom, where I picked up this cute pajama pair along with a few other perfect pieces for my off days. It’s so easy and fun to shop for pajamas because you always know what you’re going to get and there are never any surprises! I love shopping online, so one stop shops like HerRoom are the best places to get all of your pajama needs. They have a massive selection, so I like to search by brand, style, color and more to keep the options from becoming overwhelming. In my most recent visit, I was able to stock up on robes, bralettes, pajamas and more for my stylish work wardrobe 😉

White After Labor Day

15th September 2016

img_2861You guys know I’m all about breaking rules, and my favorite one to break is wearing white after labor day.

I love wearing white so there’s no way I’m giving it up just because September tells me so!  So today let’s talk ways to wear white for Fall!

Little white dress, Little black booties – I’m obsessed with the idea of pairing a LWD with your new little black booties for fall. Break up the dress with a leopard belt, add a tuxedo vest or a black leather jacket and BAM instant fall chic with a rule breaking twist!

fullsizerender-14

White not – if winter whites are totally a thing, why can’t fall whites be? Try a white tee and skirt combo with a warm chestnut colored jacket and over the knee brown boots for something new and fresh.

White Jeans, Black Tee, instant Chic – I love my white jeans, so there’s no way I’m retiring them any time soon. For this fall in-between, I’m rocking mine with a black tee and black booties. You can also dress it down with classic converse, and an army green jacket – either one will exude chic.

Sweater Weather – what about the off the shoulder white dress remixed for fall? Invest in an off the shoulder white sweater dress to pair with your favorite OTK boots or ankle booties.

fullsizerender-13

Leather and lace – We all went head over heels for ornate white lace this year (remember this dress I wore four hundred and twenty seven times?), so why not wear it into fall with leather leggings. Take this top and wear it with your favorite pair for a fresh twist on the summer trend.

All White – If you’re a really big rule breaker like me, wear all your whites with a cool fall shoe to really show labor day who’s boss. I picked up these yellow mules just for the reason, and love that they can really shake up your fall wardrobe.

Reddy for Fall

14th September 2016

fullsizerender-6Fall is here (well kind of) and that means one thing in New York: back to black… but not for me!fullsizerender-2I love living in New York; and as an Arizona born, San Francisco transplant, the last four years in the big apple have definitely shaped my style… but have also made me more me! Growing up in AZ I didn’t own any winter clothes, I had one (very light) purple trench and I remember being so excited when the weather read “75 degrees” because that meant I was wearing a coat, ha! Now that I have seasons, my style can evolve from month to month with different pieces and trends – yay!fullsizerender-10

New Yorkers love their black, but (as you know) I’m all about color – so when coat weather comes along I stand out like a cotton-candy-colored-crazy person in a red or pink coat while floating down the street. I switch out “black basics” like a cigarette pant or a peacoat, with fun, colorful ones a la Old Navy and opt for red as my go-to hue. Red is one of those colors that works year around, but I really love to bust it out for fall and wear it on into holiday (gosh, can you believe we’re almost there!!!).fullsizerender-5fullsizerender-11

As a “now” New Yorker, I have also started to wear pants more than I ever have before. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in a dress 90% of the times, but there was a point in my life where I only owned two pairs of pants (serious) so this is a serious leg up for me. Cigarette style pants are usually my pair of choice to wear with a pump, colored flat or a stripe tee. They work for office wear or weekend wear depending on how you style them and can give me some serious Audrey Hepburn meets Jackie O vibes! When I found these fun colored pairs at Old Navy I went crazy and bought a few colors – pant’s don’t always fit me, so when they do and have a great price tag that Old Navy is known for, I don’t hesitate!fullsizerender-8fullsizerender-7

I pull my pants on with a graphic top, button down blouse or a boat neck tee to wear under a blazer or bold peacoat! The colored pant makes the wardrobe, it’s a really simple and chic way to add a bold color pop in a sophisticated way. if you’re afraid of wearing color this fall – here’s a great way to start!fullsizerender-3

No matter how you fall into color this season, I hope you do it gracefully with some of these fun and affordable pieces – I can’t wait to see how you wear them!

Fear No Mess

5th September 2016

IMG_2708I live a messy life, one filled with glitter, donuts, sprinkles and more – but it’s also a colorful one, filled with cotton candy colored skirts, LWDs (little white dresses) and floral dresses FullSizeRender 35IMG_2704These things don’t always mix – I often end up with a big ole stain right in the middle of my otherwise clean outfit, yikes! But don’t fear, there’s a solution – method and their mess-fixer-upers!IMG_2712IMG_2711IMG_2715

method does not mess around when it comes to getting clean, their colorful yet powerful products are ones that I have come to rely on in my home and everyday life and especially with my laundry!IMG_2713IMG_2710

They’re biodegradable, vegan. gluten free, with no animal testing or animal byproducts. To keep my clothes free I use method Laundry 4x concentrated detergent in either beach sage or spring garden. I’ll be honest, I was drawn to method products by the colors (obvi) but have continued to use tier products because of their great sent and serious cleaning power. They say “clean should smell like cucumbers, not chemicals” as someone who’s super sensitive to chemical smell and has even gotten bleach poisoning once from cleaning her bathroom with heavy products (don’t ask) I know rely on products that are powerful, but not potent.IMG_2709FullSizeRender 33IMG_2714

So here I am, mess and all, washing away my troubles with method and must have laundry detergent! I hope you give it a whirl on your next load, to keep your colors bright and your whites white as you venture off on your next cotton candy adventure – try it, you won’t be disappointed!IMG_2706IMG_2705
