I like for my clothes to work overtime, I’m talking each piece I own should be worn like 5 different ways (or more). So today I’m putting my wardrobe where my mouth is and showing you 5 different ways to rock one floral dress. Take a look:
5 Ways to rock a floral dress: With Leather: Leather works with almost anything, including this dress. I tied it up at the top to off set the edginess of the boots & leather vest combo. With white: Adding a little bit of mod with my favorite sixties booties & a white trench With a pleated skirt: Tuck your dress into a pleated midi skirt, I choose to dress mine up with a clutch and sparkle pumps With a tench skirt: Tuck the sleeves of your trench inside, and belt it to create a layered skirt over your dress. With a blazer: Dress it up for the office with a blazer & heels, or take it for a night out with an oversized blazer for a downtown feel.
One of my favorite things about New York is a trip to the Bodega. Bodegas carry everything I need, from flowers for a shoot to a quick drink. I frequent my Bodega’s quite often, sometimes as much as 3 times a week and they always makes me feel so classic NYC. Bodegas carry an assortment of items, making them the perfect spot to shop if you want to discover new items to bring variety to your everyday purchases.
Because I’m all about embracing change and new things, thinking about this inspired me to share my hair journey, as well as my go-to look for running errands in the West Village, all inspired by Herbal Essences’ newest bio:renew collections. My look is a floral dress, a big tote to carry everything on my list and yellow booties, because why not!
I like to take a chance with my style and my hair, so I love brands like Herbal Essences that empower others to do the same. As you may have noticed, about this time last year I made a big change to my hair – I started to wear it curly with my natural texture instead of straightening it as I had done for so many years before. It was really tough to switch, I had to learn and try new products and get a new hair routine, but the biggest impact it had was on my self-esteem. It really messed with me, I looked so different in the mirror with curly hair and felt like it affected the way I had to dress, act and do everything else. I had about a month where this change really shook me. Since I only wore my hair curly when I was young, I felt like I looked like a child which upset me … and then I was even more upset that I was letting my hair have this effect on me.
Now about a year later, I love my curly hair and I’m thankful for the journey this change put me on. In the end, I guess the moral of the story is that change is good, but you won’t be able to always see that right away. I think a lot of people like to think that if you make a big change to your hair it will change everything, and it can! Changing my hair has changed the way I see things and girls represented in the media, it’s changed my morning and nighttime routine, my relationship with my boyfriend, my relationship with myself, my style and even my blog business. Changes can be scary, but most of them are good. Even if you spend a month or so hating the change or never come around to it, you’ll always learn something from it. And hey, if you make a change you’re unhappy with, especially in your hair – remember it’s just hair and it grows back.
What’s plaid & preppy & vintage all in one? Well me in high school, but also today’s outfit!
For this look, I’m combining all of the high school clichés into one look? sure why not. We have a variety jacket for your inner prep, a little bit of flannel for your inner lumberjack? (sure, okay) and biker boots for that rocker chick you always wanted to be. All of these pieces work together because they’re from William Rast a cool and contemporary brand inspired by music and available at Macy’s. The collection is full of playful denim, graphic tees, embellishments, plaids & more – plus they have pieces for both men & women.
When the weather starts to change, I think we’re all drawn to darker hues. While you’ll never really find me in an all black look, I do sometimes pair darker colors together but keep the outfit interesting with a little pattern play. Since the collection is full of pretty plaids and casual prints, I put two together today for a Tennessee meets Hollywood kind of look.
90’s baby! Although I was born in the 90’s but sadly I was too young for some of the trends the first time around, but nothing is stopping me from trying them now! My favorite one being the tank / shirt combo situation, yes that’s the technical term 😉 so today I’m styling this look from the juniors department (no shame in that) that wont break the bank with 90’s flare!
When this trend to wear a tee under your tank first came on the scene, I called it the ICarly, because my only familiarity with it was when Disney kids or Nick kids would wear it, especially on ICarly. It was a great way of rocking a cute spaghetti strap without showing too much skin making it perfect to get around a highschool dress code or keep that “modest is hottest” style that most young stars did on these channels in the late 2000’s.
Now I love it for the same reasons! I don’t usually like to wear low cut spaghetti strap tops because my girls sit pretty high up and are known to pop out when given the chance. Since my daily activities include but aren’t limited to dancing in the street, twirling around town and the occasional spontaneous broadway performance (guys, I’m extra) I need to feel secure in the styles I select and not fear to dreaded nip slip. SO thats why I love layering a top under the tank, because I can get crazy without anything getting out!
Although you can layer a tee under any spaghetti strap dress, this one comes as a set all for under $30 (like what). I had to pick up the matching bomber because its SO CUTE and also crazy affordable.
Speaking of things that are too young for the 90’s! Macy’s is hosting a fun event tonight at their store with Liam Payne formerly of One D. So you can pick up this look & snap a pic!! It’s all happening down below in the juniors department at the Harold Square locations starting at 6. Liam will be hosting a meet a great with fans while you shop! Hope to see you there!
For reference, I’m wearing a size medium in the dress but I wish I got a small, I’m rocking a medium jacket too and happy with the sizing there. OH and my boots are TTS.
Big thanks to macy’s for partnering on this post! Photos snapped by Paris on bleeker street in the west village
As you may know, a day in my life is different from the norm mostly because my 9-5 extends far beyond normal office hours. I’m not complaining – A Color Me Courtney day can be packed with photoshoots, outfit pulls, content creation, clearing my inbox, meetings on meetings, outfit changes, events and runway shows … or if could be opening boxes and editing photos for 9 hours straight. It varies, but thats why I love it because its always changing and always unexpected. So today I’m partnering with Aveeno to share a day to night look + 24 hours of smooth skin!
Shop The Look (it’s also all linked at the bottom of the post) As my day shifts, I have to look good and most importantly feel good all day long – so I like to rely on products that withstand time like makeup, hair and skin products that lasts all day – like the 24 hour skin relief moisturizing lotion from Aveeno. Aveeno claims their lotion will last all day, keeping you smooth and dry while relieving itchy or irritated skin – so I decided to put it to the test to see if it could last a day in my life.
I started the night before, showering with Aveeno skin relief body wash and applying Aveeno 24 hour skin relief moisturizing lotion right before bed. Usually I’ll apply lotion at night and again in the morning – but this time I didn’t have to! So far the lotion was doing its job and lasting through the night.
Like my lotion, my outfits often have to work double time so they can last all day. I started by dressing up this look with booties, a vest and a big bag so I could head off to my morning meetings. I love that this look is black and white, which is kind of weird for me, but still super fun and true to my sense of style. The mixing of prints and pop of color help keep it Courtney even while having barley any color at all.
After a day full of meetings, errands, pulls and just running around – I’ll switch into a more casual version of this look for a night at the movies. For this look, I met Paris for Pasta and then headed to see a new movie I had to review for an upcoming post – so it was work, but also play. Since I love to dress in theme, I switched my big bag out for my cute popcorn one – it’s pretty small, about the size of the Aveeno 24 hour skin relief moisturizing lotion bottle, but its big enough to carry what you need for a night out. Oh and since my lotion was still going strong, I didn’t even have to reapply before heading out for our movie date.
After the movie, I came home and checked my skin before I hopped in the shower. To my surprise, it had lasted for about 22 hours before I hopped in the shower, ahed with relief body wash and did the whole thing again for another crazy day.
