Color Me Corporate – The Perfect Pencil Skirt

24th April 2017

FullSizeRender 10   Three things I look for in the perfect pencil skirt: comfort, and candy colored ness? …

When I first moved to New York, I dreamed of working in corporate fashion but with degree’s in business and marketing I was afraid the industry wouldn’t accept me, so I started my blog as a resume booster. My last “corporate job” was in product development making handbags at Coach, I left about a year ago to do Color Me Coutney full-time, wee. What’s weird is that I landed my dream job, but then ended up creating my own way … #plottwist!IMG_7265

Even when I worked in the “corporate world” our dress code wasn’t exactly business casual. at Coach we could get away with jeans, sneakers and even leggings (although we probably shouldn’t have opted for the latter). In my role, there was no “typical day”, sometimes I would spend every second behind a computer crunching numbers and calculating costs, when other days I would barely sit and be running between floors, form meeting to meeting or even painting (yes painting) materials. That’s kind of what I loved about it, but I quickly learned that it was no place for a pencil skirt … at least in my role.

Well thats fine for me, but the rest of the corporate world rocks slacks, dresses & knee length skirts to their 9-5. So by popular demand, I’m bringing back Color Me Corporate – a whimsical twist on your working wardrobe with darling pieces at all price points. Today we tackle the pencil skirt, by sharing a bold way to stand out at the office with bold, printed & candy coated options!IMG_0392

Curvy Girl Boyfriend Jeans

20th April 2017

FullSizeRender 4Who needs the perfect boyfriend, when you can wear the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans 😉FullSizeRender 3

Boyfriend jeans are one of my favorite styles to wear, but they’re few and far between for curvy girls like me. A little over a year ago, I did a denim shoot for People StyleWatch Magazine where they paired each girl with a “denim issue” and helped us solve it. Mine was the inability to fit my peach into a pair of boyfriend jeans, that aren’t too big on my waist. We tried on (no lie) 92 pairs and one of the editors even said “it’s so funny, when you put on boyfriend jeans they become skinny jeans” lol I don’t think this was intended to be mean but in her defense she wasn’t wrong, that in a nutshell is one of my many boyfriend jean problems.FullSizeRender 6

The 93rd pair fit the bill, it was a high waisted light wash destructed jean from Abercrombie of all places, last seen here. Ever since, I’ve gotten a lot better about being able to find boyfriend jeans that work for my body, so I’m sharing some for you here:

FullSizeRender 5Here’s the key to finding the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans:

1 – get waisted … high waisted! If you’re little in the middle but you got much back, a high waisted pair is perfect for you. These tend to be slimmer around the waist but give you enough room for your tush.

2 – Mommy knows best – You can also shop for mom jeans, they won’t be as “mommy” on you as our bestie with a thigh gap, but they’ll be high waisted and roomy down below, once you pull them on, they might magically turn into the perfect fitting boyfriend pair.

3 – #loyalAF – Find a brand that works for you, and keep coming back. For me, it’s J.crew & madewell – which is pretty surprising because I never would have thought they would be curvy girl friendly. Remember, your loyalty doesn’t mean you can’t shop around, I always like trying out new brands I’ve never worn before because you might find the next big thing.

4 – Nip & Tuck – alter your clothes, not your body!!! alterations are key to achieving the perfect fit on all fronts, especially jeans! I find myself altering almost every pair I get or using a belt as a quick fix (like in this photo). Since most outfits of mine include a front tuck, this helps show off the belt anyways all while defining my waist and showing off my shape.

5 – Stretchy Pants, Please – When in doubt, a flexible, stretchy fabric will save you. It will help you struggle into your jeans and keep you comfortable, no matter how many donuts you eat (for the record, during this shoot I was on my second)

In this post, I’m wearing my favorite pair of boyfriend jeans at the moment. I’ll be honest, they’re not stretchy or super comfortable, but HEY they look cute. I don’t weight myself, but if I had to guess I’m about 5-7 pounds heavier than my normal weight right now (guys, don’t judge me, Im in a chocolate chip cookie phase lol) and I’m carrying it all in my thighs – so this pair is a little tight around that area. If you follow me on insta stories and saw paris tying my shoes a few weekends ago, you now know why, it’s because my jeans were too tight to do it myself ha! I included some photos of me sitting and moving my legs a bit so you can see how they only stretch a tad, and squeeze on my thighs. These photos were the first time I’ve worn these jeans, and they’ve broken in a bit since then. FullSizeRender 2

Despite some of the squeeze issues, I still love this pair. It’s actually the only light wash denim pair that I wear, and I can’t get enough.FullSizeRender 7

Unicorn Bachelorette

14th April 2017

FullSizeRender 4Unicorns and rainbows and sprinkles – oh my!FullSizeRender 5

Few weeks ago, I threw my bestie a candy coated bachelorette weekend before she says I do. Her big day is actually tomorrow (yay) so I’m writing to you from forty thousand feet somewhere between San Diego and New York City, weee.

Before I go into full blown bridesmaid mode – I wanted to share how we celebrated her last single girl weekend in style … unicorn style.

Let’s start by setting the mood – hop to my spotifty, follow me & start listening to our unicorn bach playlist! You won’t regret it!

Surprisingly, I can’t take credit for the unicorn theme – just all of the rainbow tactic things to follow, my bestie set her sights on that one all on her own.

Sheree is one of two brides, so the weekend started with a joint fiesta bridal shower thrown by one of the other brides maids. After the party, was the after party – Ree said bye to her bride and we all head to the house to get things started   IMG_2802

Our weekend

I worked with the bride & a few other bridesmaid to plan a chill, yet fun weekend. We’re all #veryverybusy so we thought it would be fun to relax and spend time together. We rented a house in my home state of Arizona, where we would set up camp for the weekend. The bride to be, Sheree, is all about movies so that was another highlight of the weekend – group binge watching which included the necessary movies (Fifty Shades, Magic Mike XXL and The Hang Over – DUH) and a few fun series like Big Little Lies. While we watched, we had a few activities to participate in >> Polaroid photos in a home made photo booth, DIY denim jackets with fun pins & patches from some of my favorite shops and a rainbow piñata because WHY NOT.

My favorite meal was the first morning one – rainbow bagels with funfetti cream cheese all the way from the bagel store in NYC! You may have seen these cuties on instagram, but even if you’re not in the big apple they ship nation wide – say what!

I hired my younger brother to be our designate driver and personal chauffeur for the weekend, and he was such a big help. He brought us a healthy lunch and drove us out to fancy dinner before we went out.

FullSizeRender 2

Going Out

We only went “out out” one night but I was really happy with it. I’m not a big club gal (could you have guessed ha) and neither is Sheree – so we ended up going to the local casino and dancing in their club. It was free and so fun, plus the crowd was great. We didn’t want to dance with guys or get hit on, just to get down on the floor with our girl group – and we did.

My favorite part of planning this weekend, was the decor! I did all my shopping at party city and it was super easy to find everything I needed for a great price. I just searched “rainbow”, “unicorn”, and “lisa frank” online and found more than I could have ever dreamed of. From unicorn balloons, to candy colored sprinkles they had it all!

When the girls got there, we had cute bando gift bags with onesies, aerie pajamas & more! This was a great way to get everyone excited about the weekend and what was to come.

For photos, we created an easy photo booth with streamers and cloud balloons. Honestly, all I did is tape them in clusters and put them up on the wall – SO EASY and a great backdrop for Polaroids and insta photos!

FullSizeRender 2

The best part of the weekend for me (aside from reconnecting with my friends) was living in my unicorn onesie. These are technically my little pony onesies, but they got the job done. I picked one of these for each girl up at party city and never ever wanted to take them off

The horn on top of a majestic weekend had to be the worlds cutest carrot cake … I think I’ll call her spark! She looks like a spark right?!

Hi Spring!

31st March 2017

FullSizeRender 4Skipping into spring with floral dresses & open toe shoes today, yay!FullSizeRender 2FullSizeRender

I’m obsessed with floral sundresses for Spring, they’re easy effortless and totally fun to wear! As you know, I’m a big fan of Old Navy and their effortless style for a killer price point, so I had a blast stocking up on Spring Styles to twirl in all season long.IMG_0851FullSizeRender 9

Earlier this week, I got to hang out with Old Navy at a fun spring event to celebrate the launch of their newest dresses. It was a great way to “Say Hi” to the season and showcase all the ways you can wear the perfect spring dress. Girls were dancing, doing crafts, making flower crowns and even skateboarding in their spring dresses … and somehow I summoned the courage to join them.FullSizeRender 5FullSizeRender 3

I feel the most confident when I’m comfortable, and the perfect dress from Old Navy always does the trick. I’ll wear mine belted with a utility jacket and heels, or sneakers and a denim jacket for something more casual (like skateboarding).FullSizeRender 10

Travel Sneaks!

30th March 2017

IMG_4189For about three or more years now, I’ve been consistently relying on on a go-to shoe when I travel… kedsIMG_4156 IMG_4166

It’s no secret that I love my keds, I wear them with skirts, dresses, jeans and shorts all season long. When the temps rise, I slip into these sneaks for my all day adventures or and easy outfit. IMG_4215IMG_4256

Recently, I wore them with a sun dress when I was back home in Arizona, but they’ve travel around the world with me – from Japan to Europe and everywhere in between. We were wandering around Scottsdale in search for something sweet when we stumbled upon this Popsicle shop and hot to stop in for a mango / raspberry pop, yum! IMG_4125IMG_4255

Classic white keds are a staple in my wardrobe, I invest in a new pair annually when spring starts! They’re so light weight, comfortable and easy to wear the’ve become my tried and true travel buddy. Since I tend to procrastinate, especially when packing, I love ordering them from Zappos, because they have fast and free shipping plus a killer return policy.IMG_4273IMG_4223

Color Me Curly – 3 Days Without Water

28th March 2017

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 1.33.10 PM

Calling all curly girls!

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 1.27.10 PM

As you may have noticed, I’ve been wearing my hair curly for the past few months, so I’ve been testing out a bunch of new products to see what works for me.

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 6.43.43 PM

The biggest issue with being curly is that I have to wash my hair everyday, because my second day curls are no bueno. Today I’m challenging myself to go three days without wetting my hair, and putting Vernon Francois product to the test that I picked up from Sephora.

Vernon Francois is a award winning hair stylist turned product developer known for celebrating diversity and texture. He’s also the master mind behind Lupita Nyong’o’s tame mane.  He’s become one of the few “Scouted by Sephora” brands, in which Sephora curates selection of hidden gem brands that often go undiscovered at Sephora due to their small, limited distribution. I love the Scouted by Sephora helped turn me on to Vernon Francois and so many other, awesome brands.

I’ll be using a few products from the Vernon Francois to get me through three days without rinsing my locks, and styling my curls in three different ways. At the bottom of this post, I’ll also share a video so you can see how I used the product and created each style.

For Day One I started with a shower and used the CURL~ Shampoo & Conditioner combo before finishing with Light Weight Styling Serum to create my signature curly bob.

For Day two I used the RE~VAMP Moisture Spray to bring my dry and dull curls back to life and into a curly pony with clip in extensions, before finishing with Light Weight Styling Serum for definition and shine.

For Day three I used the PURE~FRO Moisture Spray at my roots and throughout for a much needed lift before pulling my hair into a top of my head pineapple pony, and swirling my ends into a top knot.

Press Play to see all of these styles in action, and how my curls survive without water.

About the Brand – Now that you’ve seen what Vernon Francois can do and the wonders they can work without water, here’s one more reason to love the brand. Not only does he care for your hare, Vernon Francois cares in general! The brand actively works towards supporting women’s education and the livelihood of farmers in Africa, where the oils are sourced to ensuring all products and ingredients are cruelty free, natural, and the best for your hair … uhm yes!

Come From Away

28th March 2017

As you know, I LOVE Broadway! So, today I wanted to talk about a recent show I saw…

Come From Away
Come From Away is a new musical that highlights events of 9/11 that weren’t really talked about. I first head about the show from my Broadway-obsessed bestie (@kristinroa) who had been coming across nothing but amazing reviews from the previews in Toronto. So, you can only imagine how excited I was when I was given the opportunity to go see the show during its preview week in NYC.

Without giving too much away, the show follows the lives of a small town in Newfoundland and 7,000 stranded passengers. It’s a true story of compassion, friendship, love, trust, and gratitude.  I’m pretty positive it’s impossible to leave the theatre without a love and hope for humanity.

When thinking of Broadway, I often think bigger is better. I’m all into jazz hands and sparkles and love a giant dance numbers. While Come From Away is anything but flashy, its simplicity in storytelling and production is perfect for its subject matter. It leaves you feeling satisfied and wanting more because it’s just too good!

While there are many incredibly told character story lines, my favorite was that of Beverley Bass. Not only was Jenn Colella fantastic in this role, but this particular character’s story was so inspiring. After years of being told she didn’t belong and training just as hard as her male co-workers, Bass became the first female captain for American Airlines in 1986. Although she was just one of many pilots to land in Gander that fateful day, her story leaves you filled with so much pride as a woman and a desire to never give up on your passion.

Looks Inspired by the Show
Not only does the show leave you inspired to do more good in the world and to look at humanity in a brighter way, but it left us with some outfit ideas as well. We’ve created three looks that are perfect for attending the show or wearing in honor of its themes!

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 12.33.09 AM

The first look is inspired by Beverley, of course. We’ve taken some cues from other female pilots such as Amelia Earhart and paired a bomber jacket with a white scarf. The skinny jeans and loafer mule add an extra touch of femininity.

The second represents the people of Newfoundland. This small province of Eastern Canada is all about fishing. We’ve taken some lessons from the sea with look by putting together a chic fisherman’s cap and a wide leg sailor pant.

Lastly, the third look is influenced by the heart of a New Yorker. With a simple t-shirt that speaks to how proud you are to be here and a bag that reminds you of our good ol’ Yellow Cab Taxis – this outfit is all about sticking to what you know and being comfortable in your own skin.

Color Me NYC – Lower Manhattan Guide

23rd March 2017

FullSizeRender 12FullSizeRender 7 Although I live in NYC and have for years now, there is still so much of it I’ve yet to see. Over the past year I’ve made a conscious effort to explore more neighborhoods and fun things to do in each of them so I can share them with you. To kick things off, I’m starting at the bottom and talking about lower manhattan, or the southern tip of the city – specifically financial district and battery park area.FullSizeRender 21FullSizeRender 11

If you aren’t familiar with Manhattan (which to be honest, there is so much packed in a tiny city so I can’t blame you) the city is broken up into districts or neighborhoods and areas – where areas are essentially larger groups of districts (I know, I know, this sounds like the hunger games, but stay with me). So while lower Manhattan is an “area”, it’s made up of neighborhood’s like the Financial District (also known as White Hall and Wall Street) and battery park city. If you want to get really technical, you can include anything under Soho into lower manhattan, which would include China Town, TriBeCa, Two Bridges and Civic Center – but for today we’re just focusing on FiDi (Financial District) and Battery Park City.

FullSizeRender 10

WOOOO, okay now that you got all of that, let’s get started!

Five Things to do in Lower Manhattan:FullSizeRender 19FullSizeRender 6

Freedom Tower / One World Trade – One of the first things that comes to mind in Lower Manhattan is the Freedom tower, One World Trade Observatory and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. If you’re looking for more of a lengthy visit then the observatory and museum is for you, but if you just want to stop by and see the fountains at ground zero, you can do that quickly, easily and for free. Either way, if you’re down there this area is a must see.

Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island – Continuing the Touristy trend of One World Trade, you can hit up other NYC go-tos like the Statue of Liberty of Ellis Island. Most of these are guided boat tours leaving from around South Street Seaport that range in costs depending on the group size and tour description.

FullSizeRender 2FullSizeRender 4FullSizeRender 15

South Street Seaport – This is a historic area where Fulton street meets the East River, neighboring FiDi. It has some of the oldest and most historic architecture in the city, including former Fish Markets and renovated sailing ships that have since been converted to small shops and fun restaurants. I love walking around down here, getting seafood or just enjoying the view! If you’re looking for something a bit more organized, I suggest starting at the South Street Seaport Museum before wandering around on your own.

FullSizeRender 5Stone Street – As a big Hamilton Fan and semi history buff, I love seeing Stone Street! This was the first paved street in the city and home to a bunch of historic bars and spots that the founding fathers met at! It’s cool to see that these things are still standing, and are essentially where history was made. Stop by for a bite, drink or just to take a pic on your walk from South Street Seaport to …

Brookfield Place – If the history & walking tours aren’t for you, but great food, killer shopping and a full indoor experience is, you’ll have to hit up Brookfield Place. Located in Battery Park City, this is a fairly new shopping spot and one of Manhattan’s only Malls (and IMO the only one worth visiting). There you can eat at Hudson Eats, which has some of my favorite low-key places to eat in the city (Mighty Quinns, Dig Inn & Sprinkles, obvi) or dine in at one of our favorite restaurants, PJ Clarks.

FullSizeRender 20FullSizeRender 17

F- R – E – E – Who doesn’t love free stuff? If you’re looking to do lower manhattan on a budget, here are some completely free things FullSizeRender 13

Tour City Hall (must be reserved in advance)
Take the Staten Island Ferry (for a great view of the city and the Statue of Liberty)
See the Stock Exchange (after 3pm)
Take a selfie with The Bull
Do Cartwheels in Battery Park (or just walk around, that works too).

Some of the things I mentioned above in the Five Things To Do List (Stone Street, Brookfield Place, South Street Seaport) are also free but will usually require you to spend money if you eat or shop there.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home? For me – it’s take off my bra.

Let’s get real. bra’s aren’t fun – they’re a necessary evil, uncomfortable and kind of awkward. This is even more true when you’re wearing a white t-shirt, something that should be easy and comfortable but can become a nightmare if you aren’t wearing the right under garments.FullSizeRender 5

Recently, they’ve launched the New Nakeds, a variety of “nude” shades for diverse skin tones. Growing up biracial, I’ve always struggled with finding the perfect “nude” bra – everything I found was always a light beige, that didn’t compliment my caramel complexion. As a result, when I would wear a light white tee, you could see the bra or the outline of the bra, prevent it from being truly nude.FullSizeRender
