NYFW Twirl

11th September 2014

So today I am sharing a third (and last) outfit for NYFW. Don’t get me wrong, there were many more outfits (I averaged three a day… don’t judge me) but this will be the last one I am sharing (but you can always tune in to instagram for more daily looks/inspo).
So I wore this twirl-worthy number on Sunday to Vivienne Tam and various other NYFW events. I actually ordered a super awesome mermaid graphic dress for the event, but it didn’t make it in top so I quickly rented this guy from Rent the Runway!
I had never rented a dress before, so I was worried about the result – would it get here on time, would I like it, would I love it so much that I had to keep it, would I destroy it? In the end nothing dramatic happened, the dress fit like a glove and was totally twirl-worthy. Perfect for NYFW and perfect for Vivenne Tam. Plus it only cost me $30 bucks to rent, allowing me to skip the $600 price tag… don’t mind if I do!
Dress: rented Camilla & Marc (shop more from this designer below)
Shoes:resale Louboutins || Jewels: Armed & Readi || Clutch: vintage Moschino

Have you ever rented from Rent the Runway or elsewhere? Would love to hear more about your experiences!!! Taking a fashion week blogging break was fun, but we will be back to blog biz as usual from here on out!

NYFW 3B (Always Twinning)

9th September 2014

Showing up to Prom and finding out someone else is wearing the same dress as you is capital T, Tra-gic and basically the worst thing that could ever happen to a teenaged drama queen in a glittery Betsy Johnson … if Tulle Could Kill. Take it from me, I was unintentional twinning victim of a girl I then hardly knew but now really like (Kim Grennan I’m obsessed with you, did you even know we were twinning? or did I just creep on you from across the gym? probably the latter, so I’m sorry… by the way, you looked fab but what else is new) at homecoming my Senior year. I then wanted to hide in the bathroom stall and cry in some spiked punch all night  – I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes, I did go to high school in a 1984 brat pack movie, crazy right? Don’t worry, I chugged a red bull, got over it and busted out some awesomely embarrassing sprinkler-esque moves on the smelly gym dance floor causing me to sweat off my smokey eye and through my hair extensions…
Gosh, I Miss Highschool
Anyways, Fashion Week is like prom on serious steroids and lasts a week and a half long instead of one big let down of a night, let me prove it to you: You sit, wait and pray for an invite, sound familiar? (unless you’re like me and just ask, okay beg, for an invite to the shows you really want to go to). You pick out and plan the perfect outfit eons in advance (unless you enjoy tearing through your closet twenty minutes after you are supposed to be at your show, like I do… what a rush). And you spend all this time making arrangements and scheduling everything down to the minute only to change 90% of your plans at the last second and watch the whole event go by in the blink of an eye. See, they are pretty much parallels, right?! And like Prom, NYFW outfits are kind of crazy important. You’ll want to stand out, fit in, look like yourself, look as cool as everyone else, be trendy, wear vintage and show off for the fashion elite… easy right? totally! One thing is for sure, you don’t want to be wearing the same thing as anyone else… or do you?
I did and I didn’t mind at all! This week I found myself twinning not once but twice at Fashion Week events, and I wouldn’t of had it any other way! I loved the style confirmation that seeing double gave me – hey, if someone else is wearing the same thing, I made the right choice. Plus buddying up with another blogger isn’t so bad when you find out she’s one of the coolest people, ever!
I met (and became obsessed with) Tiffany on day 2 (check the twinnage here), although our mirroring stopped there, our bonding continued all weekend long. In fact, she wore this same yellow dress I’m featuring in this post a few weeks back… Ba-nanas!
Fast forward to Fashion Week Day 3, I wore this yellow dress as my second outfit of the day (see the first here) and was delighted to find myself twinning again, this time with Boston Based blogger, Katherine! Birds of a feather, wear yellow together! I was kind of nervous about wearing such a bright color when we are supposed to be welcoming Fall, so I loved that Katherine was also taking a walk on the bright side with me in a citrus-colored look!
As I mentioned yesterday, I finished NYFW Day 3 by rocking this yellow frock to the Reward Style Rooftop Party, hayyy! There I met a bazillion bloggers and babes, but the stand outs were SF based bloggers Brit & Whit and the queen herself Coco Rocha. I literally lost it when Coco walked in and totally fan girled out. She was so sweet and didn’t drop kick me despite my current crazy Courtney state, I should probably be embarrassed about the way I acted but hey, IT’S COCO!!!! Brit & Whit were also really amazing! Fun fact – they were the first blog I ever started reading and a total inspiration for wannabe-blogger-Courtney (back when I was taking self timer photos from my macbook, oh gosh please don’t ever go through my archives. Seriously, don’t!!!) It was so cool to finally cross paths with them, they were so authentic and awesome (just like I knew they would be) and not to mention glam model-status tall! Funny story, I had no idea they were that tall, I have this weird short-girl-tunnel-vision thing where I figure everyone is midget status like me – I’m 5’1 and 3/4, but who’s counting. Although I loved meeting them so much, I guess I will look past their height (or my lack of) and continue to stalk them from my computer. I guess tall girls are cool too… well kinda :] #jk

8th September 2014

Let’s start this post off with an apology! Sorry I have bit a bit MIA lately, as you probably have noticed by the obnoxious nature of your Instagram feed, It’s New York Fashion Week!

Last Fashion Week, I had just given my notice at my previous job, before starting at Coach, so I had a week off to play at Fashion Week events, attend shows and do street style photography with Claire Eliza (see all the posts here). But this week, that’s not the case! It’s a busy time at work (I’m in product development now, but still at Coach) so taking time off for fashion week events wasn’t really an option, I have even missed quite a few shows do to the work schedule (and let’s be honest, due to laziness). Juggling a 9-5 and 5-9 (that’s what I call my blog) is tough on a normal week, but gets really crazy during NYFW!

Anyways, this look is from NYFW day 3, but I still have to talk about Day 1 & 2. Day 1 (thursday) I worked all day, missed my first event, then swung by the Old Navy & Joe Zee party before heading to Lincoln Center for my first show – Mesika! The show ran really late, so I couldn’t attend my final party, but ended up opting for cheese with Elena and Lex at Rosemary’s instead. P.S. Day 2 was even more of a miss, I stayed later than expected at the office causing me to miss Monique Lhuillier and Charlotte Ronson, whoops! I stopped by GiGi New York at the Empire (Chuck Bass was nowhere to be seen, boo) and picked up this darling monogrammed clutch (CMC = Color Me Courtney!). After a crazy week of work & play I was craving some bestie time, so I skipped my last show & party to get donuts with Miss Daisy – #FashionWeekDropOut

Okay, now onto Day 3 – Saturday. Weekends mean no work, yay! So that means my day was jammed packed. I hit the snooze button and missed my first event, oops, then headed to soho to meet with A Second Chance Resale Boutique and pick out this pretty prada bag (love!). Next I stopped at home to change into this look, then sweet Krista had a bunch of bloggers over to her awesome apartment for a little pre party before heading to Lincoln Center for Mara Hoffman! After the show, I crossed the street, changed again (look coming soon) and headed up to the Empire for the Reward Style Party (and to search for Chuck Bass). Although CB was no where to be found, I did find Coco Rocha and some of my favorite bloggers including Brit & Whit (and totally Fan-Girled out), more on that tomorrow when I share what I wore!

Fun Fact, this top is actually a swim suit! With crop tops & midi skirts all the rage this year, take full advantage of the opportunity to expand your belly baring wardrobe by adding some swimwear or bralettes to the mix! I kept things covered by layering a Crepe Vest over the top, it also added a masculine, edgy element to play off the leather skirt and help off set the femininity of this top!

Sole Mate

3rd March 2014

MBFW has come and gone, but one of my favorite memories still lives close by, in my closet! A few weeks ago I decided I hated all my clothes, and started giving things away or selling them on eBay, and shoes were no exception. I’m just over all my heels, and since I like to add 3 inches to my daily wardrobe, a lack of heels in my life just isn’t an option. So a few days before Fashion Week, I headed down to Zara to purchase my newest shoe obsession, these baby blue tie pumps!

I usually don’t like a pointed toe pump, because they’re almost always uncomfortable and sometimes look witchy. But I instantly fell in love with shoes Zara beauts, so much so I wore them to every NYFW week I attended. The snow didn’t stop me from strutting my stuff (and usually freezing to death) in the most darling pumps around.

Aside from my 30 block walk in the morning, I wear heels everyday so I had to add something new to the collection (or lack there of) and I’m so glad I went with these powder blue pumps. This baby blue hue had a big moment at MBFW, and I even picked up a comparable nail polish color this week. Overall, I’m saying Yes to powder blue in more ways than one.

Fashion Week Favs

28th February 2014

I would love to go to Paris Fashion Week or jet set off to Milan for shows, and can’t say I haven’t been enviously eying flights from NYC but I was honored & privileged to attend NYFW right here in my own backyard.
Plus, I love American Designers! Aside from Moschino, all my favorite designers were made in the usa: DVF, Coach, Alice + Olivia, Tory Burch and Tibi! So I guess it’s only natural that my favorite collection and fashion take aways came from NYFW. So buckle up, cause today’s post is half show recap and half trend tracker as I break down some of my favorite trends from NYFW.

The Purple Spectrum
So if you haven’t heard, radiant orchid is the color of the year, and apparently one of the colors of NYFW! Orchid’s darker cousin Oxblood is also having a major moment right now, and was my go-to lip color for fall! DVF and Nina Richi proved you can’t have too much of a good thing by pairing these pretty purples together, genius!
Oxblood/Orchid the Street Style Way…
Pinkish purples and pops of plum were not just for the runway, they also came out in all shapes & sizes for NYFW
Orchid the Courtney Way…
my hue is more pink than purple, but so what! It’s all in the pairing and putting pink next to a cousin color like red & a stark contrast like green can play tricks on the eye convincing you it’s a darker hue!
shop oxblood / orchid:

Baby it’s Blue!
Although radiant orchid is the color of the year,
powder blue had a big moment at NYFW especially at Tibi and
Cynthia Rowley. I guess great minds think alike? I wore powder blue pumps all week long – (seriously, all week long) so it was nice to know that I was on trend with what’s to come this fall.
Above, Tibi and below PB (Powder Blue) the Cynthia Rowley Way…

Some serious fashionistas were already ahead of this trend, sporting a case of the blues while attending

I had a powder blue moment south of my ankles all week long, and not just because my feet were freezing!

Ferocious Fur
All hail Diane, queen of pattern! There is never a dull moment with my personal favorite, DVF who shook things up with fun furs for fall! I’ll take one of each, and I’m not just saying that because it was eighteen degrees out today….
Fab Fur the Street Style Way…
This just in, New York Is Cold! But building up doesn’t have to be a bore with over-the-top furs
Fun Fur the Courtney Way…
I suggest saving the printed fur for fall, but a leopard coat is a perfect end-of-season pick me up… and most of them are on sale, puurfect!
Tell me, tell me! What fun trend takeaways did you get from fashion week? Are you planning on holding out until fall or testing them out now!?

MBFW // Closing Show

21st February 2014

Was fashion week really only seven days ago? It feels like a lifetime but left me feeling so inspired! I even ended up cleaning out my closet and getting rid of HALF of my clothes – more on that later. Last Thursday, I attended the closing show for Mercedes Benz fashion Week, FTL Moda + Art Loves Fashion featuring some of my new favs, Control Sector Altaf Maaneshia with my favorite photographer Claire Eliza.
The First (and sweetest) Pakistani designer to show at MBFW
Tailored street-style (menswear) with a twist – every piece makes a statement! Plus the Control Sector designers are so cool and the models aren’t too bad to look at, I always say yes to man candy!
Images by Claire Eliza // Full Control Sector story here

Call me selfish, but I love buying my boyfriend things that I can steal – Where do you think the “boyfriend” Jean trend started, some girl wised up… and stole them from her man! – So when I’m looking for man-gifts I think of him first, but wouldn’t completely hate the idea of potentially stealing his new goodies!
For today’s look, I borrowed from the boys and channeled my masculine side in a Control Sector sweatshirt & hat. They would make a great gift for any guy, and a great “boyfriend” piece for you to steal! I’ve been manning up lots lately, and wearing my guy’s (Paris) sweaters all season (here and again here), but I always add my own girlie touch! This was no exception, I dressed it up in true Courtney fashion with lady-like powder blue pumps (last seen here) & a bold vampire lip!

NYFW // Michael Kors

17th February 2014

I’m still recovering from my first fashion week experience.
Luckily, I had most of the week off – I don’t know how bloggers do it with full time jobs #FWcoma. So today I’m sharing my outfits & the highlights from Michael Kors Fall 2014! Plus I’ll clue you in on my secret for keeping warm(er) in a midi skirt … when it’s 18 degrees out, burr!

Skirt: Choices only $25 (love how this one brings the drama & this pink version for spring) // Faux-Fur Snood: Michael Kors (Old, Similar: onetwo (cashmere on sale, yes please!), three) // Top: Zara // Coat: Zara (see it here) // Bag: Kate Spade (love this lucite one) // Shoes: Zara // Lips: Ruby Woo by Mac // Rings: Vintage (my moms from the 80’s) // H&M
Oh, and look who we ran into outside the show (drum roll please) Karlie! She was so amazingly stunning I couldn’t even take it. I still cannot believe someone can be that beautiful in real life. Good thing Claire Eliza was there to capture the moment, I was too busy scrapping my jaw off the floor…
If my Karlie endued girl-crush wasn’t enough,
we were then graced with the presence of this gorgeous creature: half model half greek god. Once again, Claire & her camera too the rescue – by now I had melted into a useless puddle of stripes & sparkle on the floor, only identifiable by my red lipstick… But can you blame me? look at him!
More models, and the mogul of the moment himself: Michael Kors
(Man, that’s a lot of M’s!)
Over all, the collection was very No-Cal-Chic, in a crisp, cool way.
Here are my two favorites from this fur-for-all presentation:
Runway Recap // see the show for yourself!

Wan’t even more Michael? I’m also loving Blonde Episodes’ coverage and review of the show, Kori always tells it like it is // See her full post here
oh, and as far as keeping warm while baring your ankles in a midi skirt?
I cheat & keep my sweat pants on underneath. I know, I know – so unfabulous of me -but can you blame a girl? It was 18 degrees!!!! #sorrynotsorry

From A to Zara

12th February 2014

While walking home from work last Friday, I popped by Zara to pick up blue suede shoes, but and found myself staring at leopard these pants. I wasn’t sure if I liked them or hated them, so of course I had to buy them…. (because that makes sense). So without even trying them on (I know, I was feeling super daring) I said YES to leopard ciggys and this oversized “chic” shirt!
Oh hey, have you heard about this crazy thing called Fashion Week? of course you have, but you may not know that I’ve teamed up with the amazing Claire Eliza over the weekend and today I’m sharing her amazing images. More to come from us later this week… so stay tuned, cause we’re awesome (well, Claire is, I’m just a wannabe).

Wearing more Zara than most would at once, and refusing to apologize for it:
From Zara: Coat (last seen here) // Tee // Pants // Shoes
Sunnies: Karen Walker // Bracelet: C.wonder // Lips: Wet&Wild
Necklaces: Jennifer Rex – Clover (also love this one) // Zodiac
Bag: c/o Francescas (love this one, last seen here)
Shop for your own leopard moment:
At the time of purchase, I didn’t realize my tee was as massive as it really is, oops! but I managed to channel my inner Tim Gunn into a make it work moment by tying the top up a bit and adding a tailored coat… which surprise, surprise, also happens to be from Zara. The crazy thing is I only own a few pieces of Zara clothing, and apparently most of them seem to be in this post, birds of a feather? Oh well… Zara, I hope you enjoy your free add campaign starring the shortest girl in the room. #thinkingskinnythoughts

MBFW // Control Sector

11th February 2014

I’ve never wanted to be a man more than I do today.
Okay, that’s a little bit of a lie … I had a hardcore Tom-Boy phase as a child where I only responded to the name Jet and closely resembled Lil’ Bow Wow – but those are dark days that I have since blocked out.

You can usually find me in twirl worthy skirts and blindingly bright lipstick, but MBFW designers of Control Sector have me contemplating changing my ways … and perhaps even my gender? Okay, I’m being riduclous, but so is this line … riduclous in the most amazing way.
After launching in June 2013, this fashion threesome (Two brothers Luke & Adam plus their design partner Maxwell) have created a unique lifestyle brand with an aggressive mix of influences. Bold prints meet oversized length in a functional yet unconventional collection that is still wearable! How do they do it? They’re awesome, that’s how. Their goal – make every piece a closet staple (well that puts my goal to never leave the house without lipstick to shame, thanks for that Control Sector) and if those aren’t words to live by, I don’t know what is!
Control Sector is shaking things up this year at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week by showcasing their re-invention of traditional menswear. This is not your boyfriend’s boring sweater (which I have come quite fond of wearing lately, maybe my suppressed Jet is trying to escape. Say it isn’t so!) – their lifestyle brand is the re-invented and non-tradiational line my inner Jet has been searching for. Their show will take place Thursday at Lincoln Center and collection will appear in stores across North America this spring. Make sure to follow along via twitter & Instagram to share in my VIP access to this exciting brand.

MBFW // Altaf Maaneshia

11th February 2014

photos via Regard Mag unless otherwise indicated
Oh how I love a fashion first, especially during NYFW
The talented Altaf Maaneshia is making history this week when he becomes the first Pakistani Designer to ever show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. He will be closing out MBFW this Thursday the 13th at 5pm in an epic show.

Maaneshia is one to watch. He merges high-end couture with contemporary fashion for out-of-the-box sense of style… so of course I’m obsessed. Think the late, great Alexander McQueen meets Dolce & Gabbana in a dual-functional way.. His collection features geometric angles sprinkled with silver accessories, plus a wide range of fabrics such as leather, wool and tweed (oh my).

Modern day media has given the fashion industry a bad wrap to the untrained eye. Forget what the crazies of Project Runway and The Devil Wear Prada may have taught you – “By all means move at a glacial place, you know that thrills me” kind-hearted people really do exist in this industry. and Altaf Maaneshia is the proof. He’s one of 11 designers presenting their collections ins support of the AIDS healthcare foundation!

Hey … Did I mention that he’s the first ever Pakistani Designer to show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week? Of course I did, but I have to say it again – it’s just that dang cool.

Altaf Maaneshia will be making his sparkling NYFW debut Thursday at Lincoln Center. I’ll be in attendance (cheers to that) and even hanging out back stage, so follow along on instagram & twitter for first hand access to this AMAZING designer.
