This weekend, I spent my sunday picnicking at the park with polka dots and my pup!
The weather has been beautiful lately! We’re smack in the middler of summer and fall, it’s cooled down quite of bit, making the temperature just right! So Paris and I decided to take Waffles on a little polka dot picnic at Washington Square Park.
It’s no secret I’m a polka dot enthusiast, (basically everything I own is dotted) so I had to our bring my signature spots to our sunday adventure! Our blanket is actually an old shower curtain in disguise, (curtains work the best because of their durability) and the feast included fried chicken, biscuits, strawberries and lemonade served on polka dot plates, confetti glasses, spotted silverware and a dotted thermos (are you noticing a theme here?).
The picnic started out so pretty… but after fighting off waffles with much strength and creativity, we quickly devoured it! Here’s the aftermath…

Did you happen to notice my basket? Last time I was in Arizona, I found this amazing cross-body picnic basket and thought it would be perfect for the city! Soon after, my mom sent it me in NYC and I have been itching to use it ever since! It makes picnicking a breeze and it’s so easy to tote around the city!

Twirl time! I was also excited to get one last summer look out of one of my favorite twirl-worthy dresses. I dressed it down with keds and a denim jacket, but was still able to spin with a smile. 1, 2, 3, Twirl!
What are you plans for the weekend? If the weather permits it, I challenge you to sneak in one last picnic before we’re up to our turtle necks in knee-high boots and pumpkin spice lattes! Ta-ta for now….
i’m normally dripping in color, but today i paired pattern to dress up a day of grey!
i’ve been itching to step out in shorts but the lack-of-spring nyc weather has forbidden me to do so. to say warm (or just hide your legs) pair a cozy pair of plaid shorts with tights, you’ll look slimmer while staying toasty
dots on dots & plaid on plaid: to keep this outfit from looking boring on account of the lack of color, i paired patterns in the same color scheme to keep things interesting!

today’s look pairs pink with polka dots as i step out in spots.
for a day off full of running errands && getting settled into my new apartment i looked to the art of the dot for inspiration. with polka dot sneakers, dotted denim and a pop of color i can feel cute while still being casual.
if you have a cropped or “bracelet length” coat, try layering a patterned long sleeve underneath for an unexpected pattern pop.

it’s always good to give thanks!
sorry, i am a bit behind! but here is what i wore on thanksgiving a few weeks back!
i wanted to feel very fall for thanksgiving without being so obvious outfit wise. so i took a classic maroon (very fall) but switched it up by pairing it with teal and sea foam.
sweater: forever 21 // purse: kate spade // skirt: h&m // tights: kate spade // necklaces: pearls (make your own) // belt: vintage // shoes: kate spade // rings: kate spade // wire wrap x2 (customizable && great for gifts) // vintage // betsey johnson // sunnies: miu miu // earrings: kate spade // arm party: sequin // kate spade (similar) // sequin // kate spade idioms x9 (old-ish) // kate spade // vintage // j.crew // michael kors
for this look, all you need is faith, trust and a little pixie dust… oh, and a sprinkle of kate spade whimsy && a dash of j.crew amazing-ness doesn’t hurt either.
i was feeling a little bit magical today! so i channeled my child-side for a tinker bell inspired look!
i tried to do j.crew justice by pairing my sequin shirt from a few holiday seasons ago (luckily they redo similar versions every year) with my crew cuts (embarrassing, i know) layered tulle skirt && pops of sea foam!
&& as always, piled on the accessories that included girlie pearls and bits of bling to bring a slight twinkle.
shirt: j.crew (last seen here) // purse: kate spade // skirt: j.crew crew cuts // tights: kate spade (they sparkle!) // necklaces: diy (make your own) && francescas // shoes: kate spade (not online yet, but in stores) // belt: j.crew // rings: kate spade // wire wrap x2 (customizable && great for gifts) // vintage // sunnies: miu miu //earrings: kate spade // arm party: sequin // kate spade (similar) // sequin // kate spade idioms x9 (old-ish) // kate spade // vintage // j.crew
some think kate spade is all about twirl worthy dresses, bow belts && sky high heels, but there is so much more to the brand then just that! to prove it to you, here is a casual kate spade look.
like the last post, 99% of this look is kate spade, even though it is a pretty casual day time look!
oh && as a special treat, waffles crashed this post!
my stylish sweatshirt was from august’s garance doré collection (now on sale) && reads “joie de vivre”, french for joy of life pairs easily with pops of red and polka dots!
can we take a second to talk about these polka dot jeans… oh, they are just the most amazing things! kate gave dark denim a make over with stylish spots. i went a little crazy with the dots but you could also wow by wearing them with just a basic bright tee.
top: kate spade // sweatshirt: kate spade // shoes: kate spade (30% off) // purse: kate spade // aviators // rings: kate spade // arm party: sequin // kate spade (similar) // sequin // kate spade idioms x2 (old) // michael kors
today, i’m stepping out in spots … on spots on spots on spots
&& my great gatsby book clutch is making its color me courtney debut!
its no secret that i’m a sucker for spots, so this post is just another way to go dizzy with a double, no triple dose of dots!
spots are big for fall, so don’t be afraid to make a statement by connecting the dots into a spotted little number. feel free to mix your spotted styles, but stick to a color pallet (i choose black&&white) to keep from over-doing it. but then pump up your polka with a color pop or fun accessories!
earrings: kate spade // arm party: j.crew // sequin // kate spade // pearls // sequin // vintage // sequin
p.s. if dots make your soul sing, check out these other ways to get spotted…
for this look i’m using a pop of poppy paired with b&w patterns to make a statement.
if you are hesitant about mixing patterns, try pairing two black && white prints together! it won’t come off as shocking as other pattern pairs && is uses something you probably already have lying around in your closet! try pairing your polka dots with stripes or even houndstooth like i did today! also use a solid piece, like i did with my black skirt, to keep from going over board!
some disagree, but i think leopard as a natural! i put my leopard skinny belt to work once again && used it to bring an unexpected twist to the outfit. i finalized with another spot of polka dots south of my ankles && brought some color to the look by doubling up on my poppy pins!
one tip for layering is to “double layer” or layer on either side of a specific piece. in my case, i choose a solid black skirt as my center piece && layered my patterned polka dot skirt under it && my cardigan over it. if you choose to double layer (under && over) choose a layering center piece that is opposite of your other garnets. for example, go for a solid to pair with two patterned pieces (like me) or use a pattered center piece to pair with two solid ones for maximum contrast without overdoing it!
blouse: forever 21 (similar) // cardigan: target (similar) // skirt: modcloth // shoes: kate spade // red poppies x2 // bag: kate spade // belt: express (similar) // arm party: kate spade// j.crew // sequin // kate spade // sequin // earrings: kate spade
so yes, i believe in trends, but i also believe in personal style. so when one of my favorite patterns (no matter what’s trending) becomes suddenly stylish, i have to celebrate with a wednesday trends-day post!
polka dots have been spotted all over the fall collections, but two collections were simply spot on && have to be celebrated: the yayoi kusama inspired louis vuitton collection.
i’m simply dying for those bangles, I might just have to splurge on one… or two. another splurge worthy collection is the slightly more affordable kate spade fall collection that features classic spots && dots to die for.
if you heart is yearning for these perfect polka dots but you budget isn’t quite on board, (I feel your pain. I am planning on moving to new york in 2013 so I am in full on save mode, boo) check out these spotted steals for under $100!
stylish spots && polka dots are no strangers to color me courtney, here’s how I step out in spots… hopefully these looks might inspire you to do so as well!
… and channeling my passion for picnics into a perfect little outfit for all of your outdoor eating needs.
I la-la-love picnics! Unfortunately, being the busy bee I am, I rarely get to stop and smell the roses, let alone enjoy a fabulous little picnic, but that doesn’t stop me for dressing like I can!when I think picnic, my mind goes straight to gingham, but checks are not necessarily necessary for a picnic inspired summer look! Try other patterns two like perfect polka-dots to give you that dash of afternoon whimsy. Did I mention I absolutely adore this spotted skirt? It’s comes custom sized from KTR designs & I couldn’t be more smitten, take a peek!
When creating a look based on a color crush, get creative! If you need a red/orange shirt but your closet isn’t providing one, look to your dresses for the solution! Here I turned my dress into a shirt by tucking it into my spotted skirt before layering up with the cardie.
